 Dear Families,
We have some exciting news to share! Poplar Tree Elementary School has been chosen as a recipient of the 2026-2027 Purple Star Award! 💜
Schools who receive a Purple Star Award show a high committment to supporting military-connected students and their families. Military children move frequently (often 6 to 9 times between kindergarten and high school graduation) and face unique challenges, such as adapting to new curricula, dealing with parental deployments, and making new friends mid-school year. The Purple Star program helps ensure schools have dedicated systems to make these transitions smoother!
We have received this award thanks to our Student Ambassador program, staff training, and military recognized events. A special thank you to Art Teacher Andrea Williams for all her hard work ensuring that we receive this designation.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to all of our military families and their children. We recognize and appreciate the unique sacrifices you make every single day in service to our country.
To our military-connected students: your resilience, adaptability, and unique experiences enrich our classrooms and make our school community stronger. Please remember that no matter how many times you move or where your journey takes you, you will always have a home here at Poplar Tree!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sue Andujar, Principal

Talent Show Lead or Co-Leads Needed!🎭
The Talent Show is one of the most beloved community events at Poplar Tree - last year almost 100 students performed, plus teachers and staff! We need a new lead (or group of friends!) to step up in order to hold this event. This is a fun way to contribute through a short-term commitment. We have amazingly detailed notes and guidance from past years and lots of tools and resources to support you! Help us keep this tradition alive!
Interested in this or being involved in another committee?
Contact the PTA at poplartreepta@gmail.com.

Feedback on Traveling to and From School 🚲
The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
