Principals' Update

Dear Timber Lane Families,

Our PTA Read-a-thon is officially underway, and we are excited to see our Timber Lane students coming together to celebrate the joy of reading!

Throughout October, we're encouraging students to challenge themselves, discover new books, build their reading stamina, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Every minute spent reading helps strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, creativity, and confidence!

Together with our Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we have set two exciting schoolwide goals:

  • 📚 Read 100,000 minutes as a school community!

  • ❤️ Raise $18,000 to support our students, classrooms, and school programs!

We encourage all families to help their children log their reading minutes regularly, set personal reading goals, and share their Read-a-thon fundraising pages with family and friends. Whether your child is reading independently, reading aloud, or enjoying a book together with you, every minute counts!

Important Dates:

  • Read-a-thon: October 5–23, 2026

  • Final Day for Donations: October 29, 2026

Let's keep the momentum going, Timber Lane! We can't wait to see how many minutes our students can read as we work toward our schoolwide goal.

Every page counts, every reader matters, and together we're going to make some reading magic! 📚

If you registered last year:

- Simply click here, login with your username and password, and select the green button labeled "Add to current event". You'll complete this process for each child you are registering.

If you did not register last year:

- Enter our School Identifier: 68b892fd3b5a1 - Create your profile and follow the prompts to set up your child’s reading tracker and fundraising page.

- You'll complete this process for each child you are registering.

Once your child’s fundraising page is set up, share their link with family and friends by email, text, or social media.

Every minute read and every donation helps us reach our goals. Students will have opportunities to earn fun individual prizes and milestones as they log reading minutes and collect donations.

Let’s get ready to READ, READ, READ!!

Sincerely,

Timber Lane Elementary Administration Team

Route 29 Active Transportation Study - Public Meeting/Survey

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will conduct an in-person public meeting to present and review the preferred improvements for the Route 29 Active Transportation Study. These recommendations are based on community input received following the May 19 public meeting and the subsequent online survey, during which several alternatives were presented.

Meeting Details

  • Date: Wednesday, October 14, 2026
  • Time: 7:00 p.m. (presentation begins at approximately 7:00 p.m.)
  • Location: Cafeteria, Timber Lane Elementary School, 2737 West Street, Falls Church, VA

An online survey will be posted on our webpage after the meeting. Community feedback will help shape the final recommendations to help implement the improvements over time. We would greatly appreciate your help in sharing this announcement with other community members. A flyer with the meeting details is also attached.

🚌Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

🍽️Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This National School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing delicious, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? View the Nutrition Services menus.

💉Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are available.
