Their hard work and care help keep our school clean, safe, and welcoming for our students, staff, and families each day. Thank you for all you do for Greenbriar East! We are grateful to have you as part of our GBE team!

World Teachers' Day is celebrated each year on October 5 to recognize educators and the important work they do. We are so grateful for our incredible teaching staff at GBE! They are a passionate, dedicated team who support your children every day. Be sure to take a moment and thank our incredible teachers for everything they do!

Celebrating National Principals Month

Principal Mr. Pietzman smiles beside a teacher-made sign reading, “We hit a home run with Mr. Pietzman!”

October is National Principals Month, and we are excited to celebrate our principal, Mr. Pietzman! His leadership, dedication, and care for our students, staff, and families help make Greenbriar East a special place to learn and grow. His commitment to our school helps create a community where students and staff feel supported and encouraged to do their best!

Thank you, Mr. Pietzman, for all you do each day to support our Roadrunners and the GBE community!

Field Day Volunteers Needed!

Field Day is coming to GBE, and we need volunteers to help make it a fun and successful day for our Roadrunners! Sign up to volunteer for Field Day and help run activity stations throughout the day. Bring your enthusiasm and team spirit and join us for a special day at GBE!

  • Thursday, October 15: Kindergarten and Grades 1-2
  • Friday, October 16: Grades 3-6

Please note: Volunteers will remain at an assigned station during Field Day rather than travel with their child’s class.

Save the Date: GBE Fall Festival

Join us for the GBE Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.! Spend the afternoon at GBE and enjoy some fall fun with family and friends. We hope to see you there!

Early Release Wednesday, October 21

Our first Early Release Wednesday is October 21. Students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. unless families have indicated a need for child care until the regular dismissal time of 4 p.m.

If you have not yet selected a dismissal time for your child, a paper form was sent home in their Wednesday Folder today. Please select either 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. dismissal, sign the form, and return it to school by Friday, October 9, so we can ensure every student has a safe and confirmed dismissal plan.

Thank you for helping us prepare for a successful first Early Release Wednesday!

Greenbriar East Bike to School Parade!

Join us for a new GBE tradition - A neighborhood Bike to School Parade to GBE on Wednesday, 10/21.

We’ll begin at the starting point on the map (corner of Melville Lane and Mount Royal Lane) and roll out around 8:15 AM. Kids (and parents) are welcome to join in at any point along the route—just hop in when the parade reaches your street or join us at the starting point and ride the entire way with us. There may even be a Principal Pietzman sighting!

  • Helmets required for all riders
  • Parents are highly encouraged to ride along to help guide students and support traffic awareness.
  • Please make sure bikes and scooters are in safe working condition

Whether your child rides one block or the whole route, we’d love to have them join the fun.

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

Understanding the FCPS Calendar

Help your child prepare for future success by encouraging them to develop positive attendance habits. Regular attendance supports learning and helps students stay on track for college, careers, and other opportunities after graduation.

Take a look at the FCPS calendar. Try your best to schedule any vacations or planned family events on weekends and school holidays. If the appointment needs to be during the school day, when possible, schedule it for the beginning or end of the day to minimize time missed.

If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, please report the absence to our school as early as possible. Find out how to report an absence on our homepage or call the front office.

If you or your family need any kind of support, please let us know. We are here for you! Visit the FCPS Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers

FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Under the proposal, students who qualify could attend their neighborhood middle school and take advanced classes with other AAP students. The School Board has approved community engagement at Franklin, Hayfield, Holmes, Key, and Whitman middle schools, where programs could open for the 2027-28 school year. The proposal is still under consideration, and the School Board is expected to make a decision in December.

Each community meeting offers in-person and virtual participation. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:

  • Holmes Middle: Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
  • Whitman Middle: Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m.

Current middle school students will remain at their assigned AAP centers through middle school. Learn more and find meeting sign-up forms on the Middle School AAP Centers page.

Superintendent Community Conversations

Join Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid for a Community Conversation. Students, families, staff, and community members are invited to ask questions, share concerns, and discuss what matters most to them. Everyone is welcome! Click on the date to register for any of the following events:

Registration is not required, but it helps with planning.

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
