NEXT WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7: We will celebrate Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day. There will be no drop-offs at school. Instead, we have set up bus and kiss & ride drop-offs in the neighborhood. Check out the map above and the picture below.
As always, bike and scooter riders should have a helmet. Bus and car riders will walk safely on the sidewalk. Fingers crossed for beautiful weather! 🌞
News from the Fox Den
October 2, 2026
A Message from Ms. Consolla
It's been a great week of learning here in the Fox Den across the entire school. Seeing our Grade 3-6 students entering the building with instruments for their weekly lessons is a delight. As a reminder for parents, instruments should be coming home at the end of the day that they have their band or strings lesson. In PE, our upper grade students have been recording their baseline data for exercises such as push-ups. Grade 1 & 2 students have begun preparing for their "spooky" performance at the end of the month in their music classes.
Thank you to our car rider families for honoring our "no right turn" rule during arrival. This helps keep the flow on Linton moving quickly. On Wednesday, we will celebrate "Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day." Everyone, including bus and car riders, will gather out in the neighborhood. Please take a look at the map above to see where to drop off your students. As always, pay careful attention to cones, crosswalks and your driving speed.
Thank you for your partnership in your child's education at Fort Hunt.

Everyone--including bus and car riders--will walk, bike or roll to school on WEDNESDAY. Check out the map for Kiss & Ride locations in the neighborhood.
💕Windows, Mirrors & Doors
Windows represent the opportunities we have to learn about different cultures, abilities and backgrounds. Mirrors represent the ability to see yourself and feel valued. It gives the viewer a sense of belonging which can help validate their own experiences and identities. Doors represent the opportunity to enter and engage with another culture for a moment in time. We are following the FCPS Heritage Months calendar.
This month for October: LBGTQIA+ History Month & Disability Awareness Month. If you connect with these identities, please consider sharing any family photos, books and artifacts. They will be on display in our showcase.
Astrid Mendez, our new Family Liaison, will work with you to create any descriptive labels you’d like to add. She can be reached at almendez@fcps.edu
🚌Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey
As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
🚗Traffic Safety Near Our School
We understand that families may need to drive their children to school from time to time. If you need to, please familiarize yourself with our school’s kiss-and-ride procedures for the safety of all children and staff.
Please drop off or pick up your students in the designated areas. At Fort Hunt, this means using our Kiss & Ride line. It moves quickly and is the safest option for your child. Students should not be dropped off or picked up in other areas around the school or in nearby neighborhoods. Please also avoid parking along Linton, especially at driveways and corners. This can increase the number of students walking through busy intersections and create traffic hazards for other drivers and families trying to get to school.
NEVER CROSS BETWEEN CARS: Take the extra minute and head over to the crosswalk with the crossing guard.
RIGHT TURNS ONLY: All cars entering Kiss & Ride from Linton and leaving the school driveway need to make a right turn only back onto Linton. This is the safest and most efficient way.
Please follow all signs and directions posted at our school, on public roads, or provided by school staff or crossing guards, and avoid making U-turns. Most of all, always — ALWAYS — drive slowly near our school. The safety of all our students is one of our top priorities!!
The Fairfax County Police Department has additional safety tips for families, including ways to keep walkers safe and what to do about scooters, bicycles, and e-scooters.

🏫FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers
FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Under the proposal, students who qualify could attend their neighborhood middle school and take advanced classes with other AAP students. The School Board has approved community engagement at Franklin, Hayfield, Holmes, Key, and Whitman middle schools, where programs could open for the 2027-28 school year. The proposal is still under consideration, and the School Board is expected to make a decision in December.
Each community meeting offers in-person and virtual participation. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:
-
Franklin Middle: Monday, October 5, at 6 p.m.
-
Holmes Middle: Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
-
Whitman Middle: Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m.
Current middle school students will remain at their assigned AAP centers through middle school. Learn more and find meeting sign-up forms on the Middle School AAP Centers page.
🌙Calendar Change for March 2027
FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.
Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.
Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.
A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.
Join us for the annual Special Education Family Conference: Connected Communities, Thriving Students on Saturday, November 14, at Hayfield Secondary School.
Families, educators, and community members are invited to this no-cost, in-person event to connect, learn, and explore available special education services, supports, and resources. Lunch will be provided for all participants.

Late? Walk Your Child into the Building
We recognize that situations might come up that result in arriving after 8:55am. When that happens, quickly walk your child into the office. Do not drop them off at the curb. Walking them in takes a minute and ensures that there is an adult-to-adult hand-off.

🧁Birthdays at Fort Hunt
Birthdays are a special day for children. Our PTA recognizes every child at the monthly Birthday Books & Cupcakes. Each child picks out a book to take home and a cupcake to enjoy at lunch.
Do not sent in any cupcakes, treats or items to pass out. Thank you!

Toys, Fidgets, Stuffies... Stay at Home
If your child has an accommodation for the use of a fidget in their IEP or 504 plan, we will provide a fidget for them. All toys, fidgets, stuffed animals, squishies, pop-its etc., need to stay at home even if they're small. Thank you for ensuring your student complies with this.

We are PET-Free on Our Campus
As a reminder, all FCPS campuses, including Fort Hunt, do not allow pets at any time or day of the week. This includes drop-off and afterschool pick-up. It's fine to wait up on the sidewalk on Linton Lane with your pet. This rule is in place to ensure all students feel safe and to keep our grounds clean. Thank you!
