bluestarwelcomeweek

Our Cougars celebrated Blue Star Welcome Week by showing their red, white, and blue spirit and enjoying a special popsicle treat! The day before, we were also excited to welcome School Board Member At-Large Kyle McDaniel, who visited Haycock and spent time with Principal Ferrara and our SCA students. It was a great week of celebrating our students, families, and school community! 💙🐾

Principal's Message

Dear Haycock Families,

I hope everyone is having a nice Monday and enjoying the cooler weather! Learning is in full swing at Haycock, and our classrooms are buzzing with excitement as students explore engaging topics.

Our Blue Star breakfast last week was a great success. It was wonderful to meet many of our military families and learn more about the challenges they face and the sacrifices they make for all of us.

We have many events coming up over the next week or so. At our upcoming composting assemblies, students will learn how we’ll compost at school and in the cafeteria. Nisha Bhatia, our new family liaison, has led the planning and organized the assemblies and lessons. Next Wednesday is also Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day. Please participate if you can!

We’ll also host our second Parent Coffee next week, with a focus on our Student Services team, and conflict and resilience of our students. Thank you to the entire Student Services team for planning this event. We look forward to seeing many of you and collaborating on ways to support our children.

In response to parent requests, we’re putting together a list of before- and after-school care, care options for school days off, and summer resources. We know SACC can fill up quickly. As a parent in a two-working-parent household, I understand how quickly care options can fill and how helpful extra support can be before and after school and on days off. We hope to share the list with you soon.

Our movie night on Friday was so much fun! I hope many of you were able to join us and had a great time.  Please consider joining and supporting our PTA. Events like this wouldn’t be possible without the PTA’s hard work and the support of membership dues. Joining also helps you stay in the loop about the events and activities the PTA organizes.

Monday, October 12, is a teacher workday in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

I hope everyone has a great week!

With appreciation for your partnership,

Jeremy Ferrara, Principal jcferrara1@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP   HABoyd@fcps.edu

Krystal Styles, AP   krstyles@fcps.edu

Reminders

Keeping Our Haycock Community Safe

As our students and families travel to and from school each day, please remember to use extra caution when driving on the roads surrounding Haycock. Be especially mindful of children and pedestrians, follow posted traffic signs and speed limits, and take a few extra moments to look carefully before turning, parking, or pulling away.  If you are dropping off or picking up a student during arrival and dismissal, you must use our Kiss and Ride area.

Thank you for slowing down, staying alert, and helping us keep our Cougars and Haycock community safe!

PTA Reflections Program

Haycock PTA invites students to participate in the National PTA Reflections art contest. This year’s theme is “What My Culture Means to Me,” with categories including photography, dance choreography, visual arts, music composition, film, and literature. Submissions are due November 5. Find the application and rules at tinyurl.com/haycockpta.

Haycock students have earned district and state recognition in past years. We hope you’ll encourage your children to share their creativity and take part!

Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day

Haycock and all of FCPS will participate in International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 7, in an effort to promote physical activity and reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools.

Students, families, and employees are encouraged to bike, walk, or roll to school and work where it is safe to do so. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to school, and to work with their school and PTA or PTO to assemble bike trains or walking groups for the event.

Haycock students can meet Mrs. Hecht at Door 1 to get a small prize while supplies last! Get more information about Walk to School Day.

Parent Coffee - Friday, October 9th at 9:30 am

Join us in the Haycock Library for our next Parent Coffee! We’ll focus on Pathways to Success and Building Resilient Students, sharing strategies and resources to help children develop confidence, perseverance, and the skills they need to navigate challenges successfully. We hope you can join us!

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers

FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Under the proposal, students who qualify could attend their neighborhood middle school and take advanced classes with other AAP students. The School Board has approved community engagement at Franklin, Hayfield, Holmes, Key, and Whitman middle schools, where programs could open for the 2027-28 school year. The proposal is still under consideration, and the School Board is expected to make a decision in December.

Each community meeting offers in-person and virtual participation. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:

  • Franklin Middle: Monday, October 5, at 6 p.m.
  • Holmes Middle: Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
  • Whitman Middle: Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m.

Current middle school students will remain at their assigned AAP centers through middle school. Learn more and find meeting sign-up forms on the Middle School AAP Centers page.
