Dranesville Dragons: 29 Days Strong
 |
|
As of today, 95.2% of our students in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade are attending, connecting, and attending school regularly. Our chronic absentee rate is currently 4.8%. Our chronic absentee rate on this day in 2025 was 11.6% and in 2024 it was 13.3%.
We are indeed achieving excellence together. Thank you, families, for prioritizing daily school attendance!
|
We are noticing an increase in families reporting travel plans that impact students' attendance. Please be mindful of the school calendar. Daily attendance is critical to students accessing instruction including intervention that is supportive of them achieving on or above grade level. If there is an unavoidable circumstance, please notify our attendance team. We are here to support your child and your family.

Flags of Spanish speaking countries are beautifully displayed in our lobby.

Thursday: "Music & Rhythm" Day – Wear a shirt featuring your favorite musical artist, genre, or instrument as we listen to traditional and modern rhythms to start and end our school day.
Friday: "Dranesville United" Day – Wear your Dranesville spirit wear or school colors to celebrate how all our unique cultures come together to make one strong community.
K-6 Benchmark Focus
Comparing and Contrasting
 |
|
Our K–6 curriculum teams recently dove into a Benchmark unit focused on a key reading skill: comparing and contrasting within and across texts. The academic vocabulary students learn during this unit isn't just for literacy: it carries over into science, social studies, math, and beyond!
Starting this week, keep an eye on our main lobby! You will see the core academic vocabulary and learning standards displayed where everyone can see them. By bringing the learning from our classrooms into our shared spaces, we highlight the great work happening schoolwide every day.

Check out the FCPS Quarterly Curriculum Overviews to learn more about what our students are learning this quarter. Thank you for your ongoing partnership as we achieve excellence, together!

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr
FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.
Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.
Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place.
A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.
Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey
As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
