Book: Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert

Important Vocabulary

marsh, orchards, prairie meadows, gliding, breeze, flock, rustle, lonesome, and drifting

Questions

Ask your child open-ended questions about the story.  Open-ended questions are questions that require a longer answer than a simple “yes”, “no”, or one-word response. Open-ended questions allow children to use their language skills, participate in conversation, problem-solve, think creatively, and develop their vocabulary. Children can share their thoughts and ideas when they are asked open-ended questions. Here are some open-ended questions you can ask your child:

  • Where do you think Leaf Man is?
  • Where do you think he will go next?
  • Who do you think moves Leaf Man?
  • Where do you think he will end up?

Home Connections

Nature Walk

Take your child on a nature walk to collect autumn materials to create their own animal or "Leaf Man".  Before you go, ask your child what they might like to make. As you explore, connect what you see to the story and use descriptive words to talk about the materials you find. You might bring a bag to carry your collection.

Give your child time to explore the materials and create their own design. Encourage them to share their ideas by asking them, “How did you decide to do it this way?” or “Tell me more about your creation.”

Nature Walk Sort

Invite your child to sort the materials they collected by color, shape, or size. Talk to them about what they noticed, using descriptive words such as bright, smooth, round, or large.
