Thank you for another great week and for your continued partnership and support. As we move further into the school year, we appreciate all that our families are doing to help students stay engaged, organized, and ready to learn each day. Please keep up the great work as we continue working together to make this a successful year for all of our Lancers!

As a reminder, we have a PTA meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. We hope you can join us to stay connected and engaged with our school community. For your long term planning, there is no school on Monday, October 12th and Friday, October 30th is the end of the quarter and a two-hour early release. Thank you for everything you do to support our students, staff, and school—we are grateful for our Longfellow community! I hope you and your family have a wonderful week.

Review and Sign SR&R by September 30

The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. We encourage families to discuss these expectations with their child(ren).

Families should review the SR&R and sign the acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or by signing and returning the Signature Sheet.

Registration for the World Languages Credit by Exam

This year's World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at each FCPS middle, high, and secondary school.

The World Languages Credit by Exam is an optional test for students in grades 7-12 who can speak and write (type) proficiently in a language other than English. Based on the results of the exam, they can earn 1, 2, and/or 3 passing world language credits. If that language is one of the languages listed below, consider registering your student for the World Languages Credit by Exam!

The World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at Longfellow Middle School on November 11th and November 12th. The makeup date will be November 18th. Students will be notified about what day they will be testing closer to the test dates. Students will test starting in the morning in the Lecture Hall.

Registration closes on October 16th, at 4 p.m.
Late registrations will not be accepted.

More information, including the list of languages offered on the exam, and how to register is available online.

Please contact your student’s school counselor to register for the exam.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Operation Safe Right Turn

Drive with Care. Travel with Care. Fairfax County.
Safety is a shared responsibility!

WHAT IS A VULNERABLE ROAD USER?
Pedestrians, operators and passengers of bikes, scooters, assistive
mobility devices, wheelchair conveyances, skateboards, scooters and
other micro-mobility vehicles.

FACT: Turning and backing maneuvers account for a large number of injuries
to vulnerable road users.
     • Constantly scan the environment, look left and right, for
pedestrians, multi-modal and micro-mobility road users.
     • Slow down when approaching crosswalks, come to a full stop at red
lights and scan both directions.
     • Turning right? Check left and right for pedestrians before moving.
     • Phones down, eyes up! Distracted drivers place everyone at risk
every moment they are not focused on the primary task of driving.
     • Excess speed kills. Speed slows reaction times and the ability to stop prior to entering crosswalks.
     • Use extra caution around kids and youth. Watch for sudden movements.

WALKING OR ROLLING?
     • Be predictable. Follow crosswalk and road rules.
     • Scan the environment. Actively watch traffic patterns.
     • Be visible. Wear bright/reflective clothing, especially at night.

DID YOU KNOW?
Micromobility refers to small, low-speed vehicles intended for personal use
and includes station-based and dockless bikeshare systems, electric-assist
bikes, and electric scooters!

Traffic Safety Near Our School

We understand that families may need to drive their children to school from time to time. If you need to, please familiarize yourself with our school’s kiss-and-ride procedures for the safety of all children and staff.

Please drop off or pick up your students in the designated areas. Students should not be dropped off or picked up in other areas around the school or in nearby neighborhoods. Please also avoid parking in neighborhoods or double parking in front of our school if you intend to walk your child to school. This can increase the number of students walking through busy intersections and create traffic hazards for other drivers and families trying to get to school.

Please follow all signs and directions posted at our school, on public roads, or provided by school staff or crossing guards, and avoid making U-turns. Most of all, always — ALWAYS — drive slowly near our school. The safety of all our students is one of our top priorities!!

The Fairfax County Police Department has additional safety tips for families, including ways to keep walkers safe and what to do about scooters, bicycles, and e-scooters.

Advanced Academic Programs- Fall Full-Time AAP Screening

The fall referral window is only for students in Grades 3-8 who are new to FCPS since January 1, 2026. Parents and guardians who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services must submit the Full-Time AAP Referral Form to Elaina Bafaro, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at erbafaro@fcps.edu by October 15, 2026. Late referrals will not be accepted.

For students who are not new to FCPS and have been enrolled, the spring Full-Time AAP identification window is open to students in Grades 2-7. Families interested in referring their student for consideration during the spring window must submit a referral by December 15, 2026.

Cellphones and Personal Devices

Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device. Learn more on the FCPS website.

Understanding the Acceptable Use Policy

FCPS provides students with digital tools and devices to support their learning, encourage easy collaboration, and help students learn how to interact with technology safely. The FCPS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) guides how these technologies are used both inside the classroom and at home. By following the AUP, students learn how to become not just users of technology, but responsible and ethical digital citizens with critical real-world skills such as:

     • Responsible Communication and Conduct: Communicating respectfully and using technology appropriately.
     • Digital Footprint Awareness: Understanding online actions can have lasting effects on a student’s reputation, future opportunities and relationships, career prospects, and safety.
     • Data Privacy and Security: Learning how online safety can protect their digital work and personal information, and guard against cybersecurity risks.
     • Self-Regulation: Learning to manage digital distractions to stay focused when needed.
     • Accountability: Understanding that they are responsible for how they use FCPS technology and digital resources.

Learn more about digital citizenship at FCPS.

We all Belong

Families can learn more about 2e learners, how to support them, and how to partner with schools on the 2e webpage, which also includes a link to the Special Education Handbook. For more information, please contact our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, Elaina Bafaro.

Schools Build Belonging so Students Can Thrive

What does belonging look like in our school? At Longfellow, we are creating inclusive, supportive environments where every student feels known, valued, and connected — the second goal of the Strategic Plan. From mentoring to cross-grade collaboration, when students feel safe and supported, they can truly thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. See how Goal 2 is being put into practice at FCPS.

Importance of Strong Attendance Habits

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:
     • Setting a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
     • Laying out clothes and packing backpacks the night before.
     • Talking to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning, if they seem anxious about going to school.
     • Developing back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
     • Avoiding medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

If you or your family need any kind of support, please reach out to our front office. We are here for you! Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

Virtual Mental Health Services Now Available to Middle School Students

Since 2023, FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to offer virtual mental health services to FCPS high school students. These services became available to students enrolled in all FCPS middle schools on July 1.

Parents are encouraged to contact Hazel Health directly if they are seeking mental health support for their child, have noticed changes in their child’s mood or behavior, or are having difficulty connecting with a therapist in the community.

To make it easier for families to access services, FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to streamline the referral process. Parents can visit the Hazel Health in FCPS website to enroll their child in services or visit the FCPS Teletherapy webpage for more information.

Similar scheduling considerations apply to Science Olympiad and MATHCOUNTS. Students should consider their commitments carefully before accepting a spot on a competitive team.

Questions about competitive clubs, scheduling conflicts, or after-school participation should be directed to Sofia Mora, After-School Specialist, at smora@fcps.edu.
