Roar Into the Week: Get the scoop on iReady & MAP!

Band Class

Our 5th grade Strings students are now in their third year of playing! It’s wonderful to see their skills and confidence continue to grow.

Families,

This week, I’m asking for your help. Please take a few minutes to review our three school-wide expectations with your child:

  • Show respect
  • Solve problems
  • Make strong decisions

We have had some incidents involving unkind words and choices that interrupt learning. We know our students are wonderful, and we also know they are capable of making thoughtful choices and treating one another with kindness.

A quick conversation at home can make a big difference. You might ask your child what each expectation looks and sounds like at school, and what they can do if they feel upset or face a difficult choice.

Thank you for partnering with us to help every student learn in a safe, respectful, and caring environment!

Have a wonderful weekend!

With love,

The Bailey’s Upper Team

Staff Highlight: Marcelo Ribera

Teacher

Staff Member: Marcelo Ribera, Special Education Teacher

Country of Origin: Bolivia

Favorite Dish: Churrasco and salteñas! Bolivian BBQ is especially great when it’s shared with family and friends.

Fun Fact: Bolivia is incredibly diverse! It has everything from the Andes Mountains and the famous Salar de Uyuni to the tropical lowlands of Santa Cruz. Bolivia is also known for its colorful traditions, music, dances, and delicious food.

This is Mr. Ribera's first year with FCPS and Bailey’s Upper. He has been working in education for about 7 years - 6 school years as a Bilingual Family Specialist (Family Liaison) and 1 year as Special Education teacher for APS and now continuing my journey in Special Education. Mr. Ribera is happily married and has a son.

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

child in crosswalk

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
