The Liberty Link

Two students work on their Carbon Cycle Passports at the Oceans station, rolling dice to determine where their carbon atoms travel next.

Mr. Darling’s and Ms. Wilson's 7th grade scientists became carbon atoms for the day, rolling dice to travel through the carbon cycle and discover how carbon moves through the ecosystem.

A Note from the Principal

Dear Liberty Families,

Can you believe we are already in October? Time is moving fast, and our students continue to work hard, build strong connections, and demonstrate what it means to be a Liberty Lion every day. Walking through the hallways, it is inspiring to see the focus and enthusiasm our Lions bring to their classrooms.

As we approach the middle of the first quarter, this is a great time to pause and check in with your child about how things are going. Take a moment to celebrate what is going well and recognize the progress they have made so far. If your child is struggling in a particular class, please encourage them to reach out directly to their teacher. Learning to self-advocate and work with teachers on a plan for extra support is an important skill that will serve them well throughout middle school and in life.

Middle school brings plenty of growth, and our staff remains dedicated to supporting every student along the way. We appreciate your partnership at home in encouraging strong routines and steady progress.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our school community. I hope you and your family have a wonderful, restful weekend!

-Mrs. Bromberg

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

First Quarter Update: Course Changes and Student Support

As we reach the midpoint of the first quarter, we want to thank you for your continued partnership during this busy time of year. The start of a new school year is always a period of transition, and it is completely normal for students to face a few adjustment hurdles as they get used to new routines, higher expectations, and managing their workload.

We have received a few inquiries regarding schedule updates; however, we are not accepting course change requests at this time. The only exceptions to this policy are rare, extenuating circumstances. Any potential exceptions must be discussed and reviewed with the Director of Student Services, Val Peters, your student’s administrator, and the department administrator. Because we are already halfway through the first quarter, moving a student into a new class now would require them to review and catch up on several weeks of material that has already been covered, creating unnecessary stress and academic disruption.

If your student is currently struggling, please know that we are fully committed to helping them succeed where they are. This midpoint is an ideal time to reach out directly to your child’s teacher(s) to set up a conference. Working together, we can brainstorm a targeted support plan, identify specific areas for growth, and build routines that foster confidence and keep them on track.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support as we work together to ensure a successful school year for all of our students.

Food Deliveries and Restaurant Drop-Offs

We understand that families may occasionally want to treat their students to a meal from a favorite restaurant. To help keep lunchtime running smoothly for everyone, students may not receive food deliveries from DoorDash, Uber Eats, or similar services. If a family member drops off food from an outside restaurant, the student will be provided an alternate location in the main office to enjoy their meal. Thank you for helping us minimize disruptions in the cafeteria and keep lunch running smoothly.

AVID Spirit Day: Show Your Future Goals

Showcase your favorite future path! All students and staff are invited to participate in our first AVID Spirit Day. Wear gear representing a college, university, trade school, military branch, or career choice to spark conversations about future goals.

  • Wednesday, October 7: AVID Spirit Day (wear college, trade school, military, or career gear)

FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers

FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Under the proposal, students who qualify could attend their neighborhood middle school and take advanced classes with other AAP students. The School Board has approved community engagement at Franklin, Hayfield, Holmes, Key, and Whitman middle schools, where programs could open for the 2027-28 school year. The proposal is still under consideration, and the School Board is expected to make a decision in December.

Each community meeting offers in-person and virtual participation. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:

  • Franklin Middle: Monday, October 5, at 6 p.m.
  • Holmes Middle: Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
  • Whitman Middle: Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m.

Current middle school students will remain at their assigned AAP centers through middle school. Learn more and find meeting sign-up forms on the Middle School AAP Centers page.

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
