A Message from Our Admin Team

Three Administrators Standing in Library

Dear Brookfield Families,

We hope you’re enjoying a restful weekend and staying safe and dry. As you make plans for the week ahead, please remember that tomorrow, Monday, October 12, is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and there will be no school for students. We look forward to welcoming our Broncos back on Tuesday morning!

Teachers are in the process of reaching out to families to plan parent-teacher conferences. These conversations are a valuable chance for us to connect, celebrate your child’s growth, and work together to support their continued success. The partnership between home and school matters, and your voice is an important part of it. We hope you’ll share what you’re noticing, your questions, and what you’d like us to know. Teachers will also offer a clear picture of your child’s progress, including their academic learning and social-emotional development.

There is a lot to celebrate at Brookfield! Our PTA has kicked off its big fundraiser of the year, and we’re looking forward to another joyful and successful Glow Run. We are so grateful for the many ways our PTA supports our students and school community.

We’re also thankful to Asha Jyothi for helping make our future podcast studio possible. We’re excited to launch it soon and can’t wait for our students to use this space to learn, create, and share their voices. Please read below for more details.

Our newest playgrounds are installed and ready for students to enjoy. It has been wonderful to see them exploring the new playground equipment and playing on the blacktop; the swings are very popular. These outdoor spaces are already bringing energy and joy to our school day, and we love seeing our renovation continue to progress.

Thank you for being such an important part of the Brookfield community. We hope you have a lovely rest of your weekend, and we’ll see our students Tuesday morning!

Warmly,

Lesley Hassen, Principal

Margaret Sisler, Assistant Principal

Lesley Hassen, directora

Margaret Sisler, subdirectora

Anthony Ramakis, subdirector

Thank you, Asha Joythi!

Brookfield Will Launch a Brand-New Podcast Studio Soon!

Young Bronco Hosts a School Podcast

We are excited to share that some of our staff attended the Asha Jyothi event recently and learned more about the organization’s mission. We were grateful to receive a $125 check for Brookfield from race participation, and thrilled to be awarded the $16,000 grant we applied for to create a student podcast studio!

Our proposal described a welcoming, professional-quality space where students can share their voices, ideas, experiences, and opinions with a real audience. With soundproofing, recording equipment, and furniture designed for collaboration and production, the studio will give students a dedicated place to plan, record, and share their work.

The possibilities reach across all grades and subject areas: students might create book reviews, conduct interviews, share school news, tell personal or community stories, or reflect on what they learned from a visiting speaker or assembly. They can practice writing and revising scripts, researching topics, asking thoughtful questions, speaking and listening, and working together in different production roles. Our multilingual learners can build confidence with academic English while students across our community have opportunities to celebrate their home languages, cultures, and perspectives.

This grant helps us turn an exciting space in our renovated school into a lasting learning opportunity for all of our students. The studio will be most powerful when it is woven into learning across Brookfield, and we are excited to imagine together how our students, staff, and community can use it. Thank you to everyone who participated in the race and supported this effort, and to all of you who will help our Broncos find and share their voices!

Preparing for Parent-Teacher Conferences

As parent-teacher conferences approach, we want to encourage families to view this time as an opportunity to connect, ask questions, and partner with your child’s teacher.

A few tips to help you prepare:

  • Celebrate your child’s strengths. Think about what your child enjoys and where you’ve seen growth.
  • Share what you’re noticing at home. Your perspective can give the teacher valuable insight.
  • Bring your questions. There are no “silly” questions! Ask about academics, friendships, classroom experiences, or anything that is on your mind.
  • Talk about next steps. Ask how you can support your child at home and how you can continue working together with the teacher.

Most importantly, remember that we are all on the same team—working together to help your child learn, grow, and thrive!

Families are invited to join us for Brookfield's Title I Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 27, in the library.

Superintendent Community Conversations

Join Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid for a Community Conversation. Students, families, staff, and community members are invited to ask questions, share concerns, and discuss what matters most to them. Everyone is welcome! Click on the date to register for any of the following events:

Registration is not required, but it helps with planning.

Conversaciones Comunitarias Directamente con la Dra. Reid

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
