September is National Hunger Action Month - And The Justice High School Food & Resource Pantry Needs Your Support!

The Wolf Shack, the PTSA-sponsored in-school food and resource pantry at Justice High School, provides FREE essential resources to all students - from after-school snacks to food and fresh produce for home to personal toiletries to clothing to academic supplies.

Our Wolf Shack volunteers support over 1,500 student visits a month during weekly open hours on Wednesdays & Thursdays (Room B27 from 3-5pm). The Wolf Shack can also be accessed anytime for emergent needs through teachers, social workers, family liaisons and counselors.

The need for food and resource support has continued to increase in our community. The Wolf Shack is fully dependent upon the financial and in-kind donation support of our partners, families, staff and community. Please help us ensure that all Justice students have the food and resources they need.

We are asking you to take action against hunger this month and consider supporting The Wolf Shack in any of the following ways:

  • Make a financial donation which allows us to fill urgent needs (jhsptsa.org/wolfshackfund)
  • Become a Food for Neighbors Red Bag Donor to donate easily throughout the school year  (https://www.foodforneighbors.org/red-bag-program/)
  • Drop-off or have any donation delivered to the front office of JHS (just label with "PTSA Wolf Shack")
  • Purchase directly from our Amazon wish-list and deliver straight to the school (jhsptsa.org/wolfshackwishlist)
  • Organize a food and toiletry drive through your community, church, clubs and/or service organizations
  • Volunteer for our weekly open hours, packing the family food bags and/or for food distribution pick-ups and unloading  (jhsptsa.org/wolfshacksignup)

Email wolfshack@justicehsptsa.org with any questions or ideas. Thank you again for your support and generosity!

THANK YOU to Einstein Bagels & Penzeys Spices For Supporting The Wolf Shack!

The Wolf Shack would like to thank our local business partners for donating to the pantry and supporting our students!

Einstein Bagel in Bailey's Crossroads donates hundreds of fresh baked bagels to the Wolf Shack each Wednesday to offer our students during our open hours. Students love grabbing bags of gourmet bagels to snack on after school or take home!

Penzey's Spices in Falls Church secured a large corporate donation of a variety of spices and spice blends for our students to take home and sample - from fresh ground pepper to grilling blends to curry!

We greatly appreciate the generosity of these local businesses and encourage our community to drop by and say thanks!

If you own or know of a local business interested in supporting the Wolf Shack, emai us atl wolfshack@justicehsptsa.org!

Blue Star Welcome Week!

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate, and schools are a primary way they get integrated into their new location. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 26 through October 4, 2026, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

Successful College Fair Last Week!

On, Tuesday, September 22nd, Justice High School held a college fair that hosted over 45 colleges and universities to include Vanderbilt University, Northern Virginia Community College, George Mason University, Morgan State University, and others. There were over 400 students in attendance. One of the college representatives from Roanoke College shared:

“Roanoke College will ALWAYS show up for you and Justice High School! I had the best time meeting the students and am so inspired and encouraged by their passion, drive, and curiosity. They will go far and I hope we get lucky enough to snag a few as Maroons!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!”

Review and Sign the SR&R by September 30

The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.

Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Learn more by watching a short video about the SR&R (available in English and Spanish) or visiting the SR&R webpage.

Set Screen Time Limits and Monitor Online Activity With Lightspeed

The free Lightspeed Parent Portal makes it easy for you to see and manage how your child uses their FCPS-issued device outside of school hours. New Lightspeed Parent Portal features for this school year include:

  • Schedules: Pause or restrict internet access during specific times, such as during homework time, family dinners, weekends, or bedtime.
  • Web Rules: Block specific websites you don’t want your child accessing at home.

Be sure to check your email (subject line: “Filter Portal Weekly Report”) each Sunday for the Lightspeed Student Online Activity Report, a weekly summary of the websites your child has visited. Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Understanding the Acceptable Use Policy

FCPS provides students with digital tools and devices to support their learning, encourage easy collaboration, and help students learn how to interact with technology safely. The FCPS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) guides how these technologies are used both inside the classroom and at home. By following the AUP, students learn how to become not just users of technology, but responsible and ethical digital citizens with critical real-world skills such as:

  • Responsible Communication and Conduct: Communicating respectfully and using technology appropriately.
  • Digital Footprint Awareness: Understanding online actions can have lasting effects on a student’s reputation, future opportunities and relationships, career prospects, and safety.
  • Data Privacy and Security: Learning how online safety can protect their digital work and personal information, and guard against cybersecurity risks.
  • Self-Regulation: Learning to manage digital distractions to stay focused when needed.
  • Accountability: Understanding that they are responsible for how they use FCPS technology and digital resources.

Learn more about digital citizenship at FCPS.

New ParentVUE Mobile App Is Here

The new ParentVUE mobile app is available in the Apple and Google App stores. This new app provides parents and caregivers with a more secure sign-in. Families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their ParentVUE account. The previous app will be deactivated at the end of 2026.

In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. While enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this security feature. Learn more about installing the new ParentVUE app. Parents needing assistance should submit a Parent Support Request.

Keeping Children Safe Online

The Fairfax County Police Department shares these resources to help keep children safe online.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage.
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
