Good afternoon, Irving Community,
Fall is here, and this past week marked the beginning of Friday Enrichment! At Irving MS, students can select from a wide variety of opportunities to explore their interests, learn new skills, and collaborate with peers and staff. Across the building, students are jamming in a band, producing podcasts, working out in the weight room, engaging in robotics, drafting restroom redesigns, and participating in many other exciting activities. Be sure to ask your student about their Friday Enrichment experience!
This coming week, our eighth-grade students will attend JA Finance Park as part of their learning in Civics and Economics. Through classroom curriculum and an interactive simulation, this program helps students develop the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions related to income, expenses, savings, and credit.
Irving will also participate in Blue Star Welcome Week. Each year, more than 600,000 military families move to new communities. This national initiative helps ensure that military-connected families feel welcomed and encourages community members to support them. On Tuesday, September 29, Irving will host a Blue Star Parent Coffee for military families who are new to our school community. We look forward to connecting with you!
With appreciation,
Emily Cincinnati
Principal

Fall Full-Time AAP Referral Window for Students New to FCPS Closes on October 15
The fall referral window is only for students in Grades 3-8 who are new to FCPS since January 1, 2026. Parents and guardians who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services must submit the Full-Time AAP Referral Form to Katie Richter, Irving’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at kerichter@fcps.edu by October 15, 2026. Late referrals will not be accepted.
For students who are not new to FCPS and have been enrolled, the spring Full-Time AAP identification window is open to students in Grades 2-7. Families interested in referring their student for consideration during the spring window must submit a referral by December 15, 2026.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time AAP services.
Referral form and additional information can be found on the Advanced Academic Program website linked here.

Set Screen Time Limits and Monitor Online Activity With Lightspeed
The free Lightspeed Parent Portal makes it easy for you to see and manage how your child uses their FCPS-issued device outside of school hours. New Lightspeed Parent Portal features for this school year include:
-
Schedules: Pause or restrict internet access during specific times, such as during homework time, family dinners, weekends, or bedtime.
-
Web Rules: Block specific websites you don’t want your child accessing at home.
Be sure to check your email (subject line: “Filter Portal Weekly Report”) each Sunday for the Lightspeed Student Online Activity Report, a weekly summary of the websites your child has visited. Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.
Digital Literacy Resources for Families
As part of FCPS’ continued support for digital literacy, families can access lesson materials that introduce the concepts students will explore throughout the school year. These resources include student lessons and supporting materials organized by grade level. Resources will be shared on a quarterly basis through Schoology.
The All Parent/Guardian Course is available in Schoology through a parent or guardian account. Schoology and ParentVUE use the same login credentials. Families who need assistance can review How Do I Log in to and Access Schoology? or watch the brief walkthrough on the Schoology Snippets page.
Families can also learn more about FCPS guidance and practices on the Educational Technology in FCPS webpage.
Library News
Students have found their way to the Irving Library! Our circulation rates are healthy, with so many books coming in and going out every day.
All seventh-grade students visited the library during the first two weeks of school to do an orientation activity and to borrow a book for a first-quarter English class project.
We’re also happy to report that students are finding the library a comfortable space to hang out before school and at break.
After School Information
The After School Program runs 5 days a week unless noted. Tales Across Town
WSHS Grassroots Challenge
Irving Middle School Families,
Our future Spartans at Irving are just a short step away from West Springfield High School, where many will compete in Flag Football, Soccer, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, and Football. We’re launching the Spartan Surge to build Turf Field #2 at WSHS! With a $250,000 grant secured from the NFL Foundation and Washington Commanders (read the official feature on Yahoo Sports), we are raising $150,000 by October 31 to complete the project.
-
The $30 Challenge: If every family asks 5 family members, neighbors, or friends to donate $30, we hit our goal!
-
Why It Matters: Eliminates deteriorating field conditions, keeps students on campus, and creates a safe playing surface for our rising Irving athletes.
-
Support Irving: Donate $30 on GoFundMe and leave "Irving Middle School" in the comment box so we can feature Irving on our SportsYou leaderboard!
Learn more at our Spartan Surge Hub or read the grant coverage on Yahoo Sports.
