Roadrunner Rundown

September 22, 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We enjoyed seeing so many of you at BTSN last week. We hope that visiting your child’s classroom and getting a glimpse of their school day allowed for some fun conversations. If you did not make it, please connect with your teachers to schedule a fall conference before the second week of November to gain insights specific to your child’s growth.

Ms. Villanueva (art teacher) led students in a collaborative project entitled “Stronger Together” made out of popsicle sticks. They talked about what it means to be a citizen/member of a community and how by helping each other our art can be even better. If you look closely you can see specific visions on some of the sticks and others that are more simple. Ms. Villanueva reminded students that regardless of their skill level, once all of the sticks were put together, they created something striking and special!

Art Collage

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett and Kelly Willis

School Events and Information

Review and Sign the SR&R by September 30

The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.

Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Learn more by watching a short video about the SR&R (available in English and Spanish) or visiting the SR&R webpage.

Field Trip Chaperones and PTA Event Volunteers

You will see a pop-up message that says it will take a few minutes to load. Then confirm your information and answer the attestation/criminal disclosure questions again.

New volunteers should go to: https://volunteer.fcps.edu/custom/501/affiliation_details/3205

  1. Create a Profile in the Volunteer FCPS portal.
  2. Follow application instructions.
  • Watch the orientation video, Pick LEVEL 2 for field trips, Tuesday folders, or F4T or Pick LEVEL 1 for onetime events like the Runathon, Family Fun Night etc.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screening

FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding, and managing emotions, establishing, and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring. Marshall Road ES has scheduled the administration of the fall SEL Screener for the week of October 19th-23rd.  Opt-outs forms have been shared through The Parent Digital Consent System at the FCPS Opt-Out Page. Questions?  Please reach out to Meg Gillespie at mmgillespie@fcps.edu or (703) 937-1558.

Staff Spotlight

Hala Fischer has been a part of the MRES community since 2019. With teaching experience in enhanced autism, CSS, and general education, she is taking a step back and enjoying the IA floater life. Mrs. Fischer is staying busy this school year by being the Equity Committee lead, Science Olympiad head coach, and a member of the FSAC. Her favorite part about MRES is the strong sense of community and belonging. In Mrs. Fischer’s free time, she is currently teaching herself Spanish and working with oil pastels!

Not Feeling Well? When Your Child Can Come to School

School is better when your child is here! But we do understand that some days, they may feel unwell. Learn more about which symptoms are ok at school (like sneezing or sniffles), and when your child should stay home (if they have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, for example). Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify the school so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school public health nurse. Call the school as soon as you know your child will be absent and, if possible, let them know how long you think they will be out.

If you or your family need any kind of support, please reach out to our front office. We are here for you! Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.
