Dear Columbia ES Friends and Families,

We had a wonderful four-day week at Columbia! It was great to see our students engaged in learning, connecting with classmates, and continuing to build positive momentum as a school community throughout the 1st quarter of school.

We’re excited to see everyone at our Fall Picnic tonight from 5:00–7:00 p.m. We hope you’ll join us for a fun evening together with our Columbia community!

Also, please see below for a reminder about a volunteer opportunity tomorrow morning at the main entrance of the school. We appreciate all the ways our families contribute their time and support to make Columbia such a special place.

Have a wonderful weekend, and we hope to see you tonight!

Take care,

Spotlight on Specials - Art!

f

Hello, CES Families!

We are having a fun and productive 1st quarter in Art class. It was great seeing so many parents at Back to School Night. I hope you were able to check out your child’s Beautiful Oops Art hanging in the hallways.

  • Kindergarteners have been exploring multiple media with centers in art class, drawing self-portraits and strengthening their fine motor skills with modeling clay.
  • 1st graders have been learning about the artist Diego Rivera and murals and practicing using shapes to draw people in family portraits.
  • 2nd graders have been observing artworks by Grant Wood and learning about overlapping. They have been creating drawings and paintings that demonstrate overlapping and share places they enjoy in their community.
  • In 3rd grade, we have been learning about facial proportions and creating a self-portrait that reveals our cultural identity.
  • 4th graders have been studying the proportion of the human figure through gesture drawings and will be working with wire to make a sculpture of a figure in action. I would love to have some parent volunteers to help with the wire sculptures!
  • 5th graders learned about contour line drawing and have been designing their own video game landscape. Ask them what landforms they are including in their landscape painting.

Thank you as always, for your continued support of our Art program and a special thank you to those of you who have been sending in yogurt cups for our paint stations and recycled bubble wrap envelopes. Donations are always appreciated!

Sincerely,

Michelle McKenna (Art Teacher)
