Dear Clermont Families,
On Friday, a student was almost struck by a vehicle on Clermont Drive. Thankfully, the driver was paying attention and an accident was avoided at the last second. But this was a very close call. In this particular scenario, the student was not crossing at the crosswalk as per the encouragement of the caretaker. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident and staff witness these close calls frequently. As we prepare to come back to school from a long weekend, I want to take a moment to remind you of some very important safety procedures we all must follow around our school to keep our students and staff safe.
- Please use one of three safe ways to arrive at and leave Clermont ES: ride the bus, use Kiss and Ride, or walk and cross streets only at designated crosswalks.
- Do not drop off or pick up students along Clermont Drive or Arcross Court. Students should only exit vehicles in the designated Kiss and Ride area.
- Please do not park along Clermont Drive or Arcross Court and walk students to or from school. Parked vehicles, especially those parked in front of the school on Clermont Drive, can create blind spots for crossing guards and make it difficult for drivers to see students, oncoming cars, and pedestrians.
- Families using Kiss and Ride must turn right when exiting the school parking lot during arrival and dismissal. This traffic pattern is in place to protect students, staff, and crossing guards. Families may safely turn around elsewhere in the neighborhood if needed.
- Please remember that even when an individual action may appear safe, unexpected pedestrian or vehicle movements can create serious risks for children and other drivers.
We ask for your partnership in enforcing these safety procedures, because nothing is worth putting the safety of our students or staff at risk. I also encourage you to review this important traffic safety information from the Fairfax County Police Department.
