A Note From Principal Seward
Good Evening, Seahawk Community -
We are already completing our first month of school! By now, our students are settling into their daily routines, and throughout South Lakes, our classrooms and hallways are filled with energy, learning, and engagement.
One area where your partnership is especially important is regular and timely attendance. Every day matters. Every class matters. Every minute matters.
We continue to see our greatest attendance challenge at the beginning of the school day. Arriving at school and class on time ensures that students do not miss valuable instruction, opportunities to connect with teachers and classmates, or the routines that set the tone for a successful day. Missing more than two days of school per month, regardless of the reason, can put a student on track to be considered chronically absent. Please continue talking with your student about the importance of being present, prepared, and on time.
Of course, being present at South Lakes is about more than simply being in class. We want our students to feel that they belong here.
I continue to encourage every Seahawk to find a way to get involved. Whether through athletics, performing arts, clubs, student organizations, service, or one of the many other opportunities available at South Lakes, there is a place for every student to connect. Students should look for information posted throughout the school and pay close attention to Schoology announcements for club meeting dates, times, and opportunities to participate.
Finally, I hope you will join us for Back to School Night this Wednesday, September 23. It is a wonderful opportunity to walk your student's schedule, meet our teachers, experience our school, and see firsthand the tremendous work taking place throughout South Lakes each day. Additional information is included in this week's News From The Lakes, and we will send families a reminder on Tuesday.
Have a great week!
With Gratitude,
Carlos Seward
We value your feedback. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.

 Reporting Student Attendance
Regular attendance is essential for student success. Research shows that absenteeism in the first month of school often predicts poor attendance for the rest of the year—half of the students who miss 2–4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. To help your student get the most out of their education, please make sure they are in school and on time every day.
If your student must be absent, please notify the school by calling the attendance line at 703-715-4545. Families also have the option to submit full-day absences directly through SIS ParentVUE. Please go go the Attendance Reporting page on our website for more information.
After School Attendance and Academic Program (ASAAP)
ASAAP sessions have begun. Please join us for academic assistance every Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm-4:30pm in the library. We have tutors, snacks. For every 3 hours of after school work, one day of absence is recovered. Start the year off strong and join us!
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation identifies students nationwide from their performance on the qualifying test (PSAT NMSQT) administered last October.
Less than 1% of the nation’s high school graduation seniors will qualify as Semifinalists. Semifinalists will have an opportunity to advance in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards. 34,000 students have been identified as Commended Students. While Commended Students will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some may be candidates for Special Scholarships offered by corporate sponsors.
On Friday, September 18, 2026, we celebrated our 2 Semifinalists and 15 Commended Students here at South Lakes.
Important Safety Expectations Reminders!
SLHS is committed to the safety of our school. Here are some important reminders:
Leaving School Without Permission
- Students are not permitted to leave campus at any time without permission. This includes during lunch and stepping out to your car in the parking lot.
- The 1st Offense is 3 one-hour after-school detentions or temporary loss of your parking pass Additional offenses include ISS, temporary or permanent loss of your parking pass, and temporary bans from activities/games.
Opening Doors to Let Others in the Building
Keeping our campus secure requires everyone's cooperation.
- All students/visitors arriving during the school day must enter through Door 1 and pass through the Open Gate screening system. Never open an exterior door to let anyone into the building—whether you know them or not.
- The 1st Offense is In-School Suspension (ISS).
Thank you for communicating these expectations with your students to help us keep our school safe.
Review and Sign the SR&R by September 30
The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.
Learn more by watching a short video about the SR&R (available in English and Spanish) or visiting the SR&R webpage.
Cellphones and Personal Devices
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device. Learn more about the student device requirement.

South Lakes High School Food Pantry Update
The South Lakes Food Pantry serves a vital need for the people in our community by offering food staples and toiletries free of cost and supports hundreds of our community’s families each week.
The pantry is open to families in the area on Thursdays after school beginning at 4:30. We also provide an opportunity for our students to visit the food pantry on Thursday afternoons prior to dismissal. The first day that students will have access to the food pantry during the school day will be on Thursday, September 17th.
This year, only students whose parents/guardians have completed a permission form are allowed to access the pantry during instructional time. Please complete this Food Pantry Permission Google form to grant your student permission to visit the pantry.
All students are welcome to visit the pantry after the school day has ended from 2:55 pm - 3:15 pm - parent permission is not needed to visit the pantry after the school day has ended.

Final Core Course Change Request Windows
We have two remaining windows in which students are able to change their core course:
-
September 8 – 25, 2026: Students are able to request to change their core course if they are “leveling up”. For example, a student wants to move from English to English Honors. This does not include leveling to a DE course.
-
September 28 – October 5, 2026: Students are able to request to change their core course if they are “leveling down”. For example, a student wants to move from English Honors to English.
If your student is interested in either of these windows, please have them connect with their school counselor. Change is dependent on space available and is not guaranteed.

SAT School Day and PSAT/NMSQT Testing Day
SAT School Day and PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) exams will be held at each high school on Wednesday, October 7, at no cost to families. The digital SAT School Day exam is offered to 12th grade students, and the digital PSAT/NMSQT exam is provided to 10th and 11th grade students.
Unscheduled Day for 9th Grade Students
Because of the testing, most 9th grade students will not have school on October 7. Students are encouraged to complete any missing work or assignments that need to be completed prior to the end of the first quarter.
Ninth grade students with disabilities who receive low incidence special education services will still receive in-person instruction with a two-hour early release on October 7.
Contact the Student Services team at your child’s school with any questions. Learn more about SAT and PSAT assessments in FCPS.
Twice Exceptional Students
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. Twice-Exceptional (2e) learners are students who are gifted and have learning challenges or disabilities.
Families can learn more about 2e learners, how to support them, and how to partner with schools on the 2e webpage, which also includes a link to the Special Education Handbook.
New information, including printable flyers, has been added under the heading Supporting 2e Learners in FCPS.

Excited to announce that SLHS PTSA is launching its inaugural participation in Reflections — the oldest running national and largest arts education and recognition program of its kind! We will have at a minimum seven category winners moving to county level competition (and hopefully beyond to state and national levels), so get ready to make the most of your summer in exploring the arts and creating amazing original work of art.
Reflections is a National PTA arts recognition program started in 1969 that helps students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence, and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful not only in school, but in life.
Each year, more than 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, and Accessible Art Division.
The theme of the Reflections program for 2026-2027 is "What My Culture Means to Me." The due date for 2026-2027 program submissions will be November 1, 2026. Students have now through the whole summer break to think about how to work on this Reflections art project. More information will be shared and updates on specific deadlines for the 2026-2027 school year will be posted here. If your student is interested in participating in this art program, these links may be helpful:

"The Lakes -- Podcast"
Last year, Billy Watts, our Assessment Coach, and resident genius, created the first ever South Lakes High School Podcast, entitled "The Lakes!" The podcast featured stories, interviews, and advice for students, parents, educators, and community about all things South Lakes High School.
He plans to continue and grow his podcasts this year with episodes called "senior playbook" based on the SEL intervention "saying is believing." Keep an eye out for these new stories and more as we begin the 2026-2027 school year. Check out and subscribe to our school's podcast, "The Lakes" on Apple, Spotify, or Amazon podcasts.

Strategic Plan
Our Focus on Academic Growth and Excellence
The FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.
The third goal is for all students to achieve academic growth and excellence. We want our students to have the academic skills to be successful, including reading on level by third grade. See how Goal 3 is being put into practice.

Apply Today for Free and Reduced-Price Meals
According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Studies show that students who eat both school breakfast and lunch tend to have healthier diets than those who don't participate in school meals.
Families who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals can receive breakfast and lunch at no cost for their children. This includes more than one-third of FCPS students. Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM) application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits.
The application for FRM is now available for the 2026-27 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed).
ACTION: Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible children continue to receive meals at no cost.
Access the application and view criteria and up-to-date information on the FRM webpage. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.
