Dear Thoreau Families,
The Town of Vienna Parks and Recreation needs our help keeping community spaces safe and clean! Please note that e-bikes and e-scooters are strictly prohibited on all athletic fields, including Waters Field. Additionally, effective immediately, Waters Field is NOT permitted as an after-school hangout spot for students.
Recent misuse has led to safety hazards, litter, and turf damage, prompting local officials and police to increase preventive measures and lock field gates. We have announced this news to our students this week, but we also need parents to discuss these new rules with their children to help preserve these spaces for scheduled athletic use. This is also a good time to remind your child about appropriate behavior should they visit local Vienna or Fairfax businesses after-school. Thank you for your support in keeping our community and grounds safe!
Please remember that Monday September 21, is a holiday and schools and offices will be closed. See the complete school year calendar.

The Thoreau PTA will be publishing a family email directory of PTA members. As a reminder, parents need to submit the Directory opt-out if they do not wish for their email address to be published. This can be done through the FCPS Parent Digital Consent
May all in our Jewish community observing Yom Kippur have an easy and meaningful fast. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish year. This day is also known as the Day of Atonement and many Jews spend the day in prayer and fasting. #OurFCPS
The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Registration for the World Languages Credit by Exam:
Registration begins on Tuesday, September 9th and closes on Friday, October 16th at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.
The World Languages Credit by Exam is an optional test for students in grades 7-12 who can speak and write (type) proficiently in a language other than English. Based on the results of the exam, they can earn 1, 2, and/or 3 passing world language credits. If that language is one of the languages listed on the FCPS website, consider registering your student for the World Languages Credit by Exam!
The 2026 World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at Thoreau Middle School during the Week of November 9th. More details about the test date will be sent out after the registration deadline closes.
Please contact your student’s school counselor to register for the exam.

Eighth graders who have an aptitude and passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) are encouraged to apply for admission to the Class of 2031 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST).
The application will be available Monday, October 5, at 4 p.m. Applications must be started by 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, with a submission deadline of 4 p.m. Friday, October 30. Visit the TJHSST registration page for more information, including a schedule of upcoming information sessions at middle schools.
After-school programming continues next week! Clubs and Activities will be available Tuesday, September 22 through Thursday, September 24.

Late Buses
Late buses will run Tuesday–Thursday next week. Please review the late bus stops and bus numbers and make sure students know how they are getting home before staying after school.
Stay Up to Date on Schoology
Students and families should continue to check the After School Program Schoology Course for the most current after-school information, including:

- Science Olympiad information
- Club descriptions and additional program resources
A Few Reminders
Students must have an After-School Registration Form on file before participating and must sign in each day they stay after school. Students should also HAVE A PLAN before staying: know what activity you are attending, make sure your family knows you are staying, and know how you are getting home.

Club Phoenix Teen Center opens Tuesday, September 22! Thoreau students can participate Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Students must register in advance: Club Phoenix Registration
A shuttle van will transport participating students from Thoreau Middle School to the Vienna Teen Center after school. Students should report to the cafeteria at dismissal and sign in for after-school attendance. Once attendance is complete, students will be dismissed from the cafeteria to the shuttle van.
🚐Important transportation information: Families are responsible for transportation home from the Vienna Teen Center. Students must either be picked up by a parent/guardian or walk home from the Teen Center. There will be no transportation back to Thoreau Middle School.
Club Phoenix offers a variety of activities, including games, recreational sports, arts and crafts, special-interest clubs, tutoring/mentoring opportunities, field trips, and more.

TheatreMania
Middle school students are invited to join at Kilmer Middle School on Saturday, November 7, for a day of hands-on theatre workshops led by theatre professionals. Students will participate in four workshops covering areas such as acting, dance, vocal performance, improv, technical theatre, design, directing, and more.
Students of all experience levels are welcome!

Marshall Road Elementary School is looking for middle and high school student volunteers to help with its Fall Family Picnic!

Students can earn up to 3 service hours for volunteering, and pizza will be provided! 🍕
Volunteer opportunities include event setup and cleanup, concessions and ice cream distribution, field games, face painting/tattoos, and helping wherever most needed.

Madison High School is excited to host this week’s Varsity Football game. We are expecting a large turnout and to help ensure all participants and attendees have a safe and fun night, please review the following fan/spectator expectations & entry procedures.
PLEASE NOTE: The administration reserves the right to remove anyone for inappropriate or illegal behavior. FCPS policy prohibits the use of tobacco and alcohol products on school grounds. Violations of FCPS policies are subject to the SR&R and/or additional consequences.
1. Weapon Detection/Clear Bags/No Outside Food or Drink: In accordance with FCPS policy, we will be utilizing our Open Gate weapon detection system for all fans/spectators entering the game.
- All fans/spectators must enter through the security screening stations prior to entering the stadium.
- Approved bags are limited to clear plastic/vinyl, or PVC bags no larger than 12” x 6” x 12” / small clutch bags no larger than 6.5” x 4.5” / medical and diaper bags permitted but subject to inspection
- No outside food or beverages are permitted in the stadium.
2. High School age students will be required to show their student ID or SIS account verifying the school they attend. High School age student conduct and behavior are subject to the expectations outlined in the FCPS SR&R and are enforceable.
3. Elementary and Middle School age students must be accompanied by a responsible parent/guardian (max 3 kids per parent/guardian) who remains with the student(s) at the event. The parent/guardian will be required to complete a sign-in form and confirm the name(s) of their child(ren) and a good cell phone # to be contacted if necessary. Parents/guardians will also acknowledge they have communicated the expectations for appropriate behavior at tonight’s event and acknowledge their responsibility to always supervise their child(ren).
4. No entry into the stadium at the start of the 4th quarter. Madison security staff will stop entry of all guests/fans at the start of the 4th quarter. Once fans exit, they will NOT be able to re-enter the stadium.
5. Ticket Info – gates open @ 6pm (**5pm on Friday September 18th – County Fair)
- Online Tickets: Use the link HERE to purchase tickets ahead of time.
- Adult tickets ($7) available for purchase starting @ 8am, the day of the game.
- Student tickets ($5) available for purchase @ 3pm, the day of the game.
**Online ticket sales will be the fastest method of entry**
- Box Office Tickets: Tickets will be available for sale at the Box Office. Cash and Credit Cards are accepted.
**No Apple Pay, Venmo, etc electronic payment methods accepted at the Box Office**

School is better when your child is here! But we do understand that some days, they may feel unwell. Learn more about which symptoms are ok at school (like sneezing or sniffles), and when your child should stay home (if they have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, for example).
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify our school so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with our public health nurse. Call us as soon as you know your child will be absent and, if possible, let us know how long you think they will be out.
