May all in our Jewish community observing Yom Kippur have an easy and meaningful fast. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish year. This day is also known as the Day of Atonement and many Jews spend the day in prayer and fasting. #OurFCPS

Dear Wakefield Forest Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful week! I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our Back to School Night. It was fantastic to see our school filled with so many smiling faces and to feel the incredible energy and support of our community.
As we kick off the new year, I am also excited to highlight our Friday elective sessions! Every Friday, starting October 2nd from 2:20 PM to 3:20 PM, our 5th and 6th grade students participate in special elective classes. These sessions are designed and taught by our dedicated WFES staff, providing our students with an amazing opportunity to dive deeper into specific areas of interest, explore new passions, and engage in creative, hands-on learning. Make sure to connect with your child about which elective they are interested in.
Additionally, I would like to share a brief safety reminder with our community. We have received several reports from neighborhood residents expressing continued concerns regarding bicycle and e-bike safety around our school grounds and nearby streets. Please take time to review basic traffic safety with your children, including wearing a properly fitted helmet, obeying stop signs and traffic rules, remaining aware of pedestrians, and operating e-bikes responsibly. Working together to reinforce these habits helps ensure that all of our students stay safe on their travel to and from school.
Thank you once again for your continued partnership and dedication to making Wakefield Forest Elementary such a special place for our students to learn and grow.
Warm regards,
Principal Prindle

Under Virginia Code § 22.1-273, public schools must screen students for hearing and vision issues in kindergarten, grade 3, and newly enrolled students. Hearing and vision screenings will be held for all Kindergarten and 3rd grade students. These will occur in the morning. Students should bring their glasses to the screening if they wear them regularly for school.
The schedule is as follows:
September 23rd - Ms. Thomas and Ms. Vick
September 24th - Ms. Teran
October 8th - Ms. Maturan and Ms. Sill
October 9th - Ms. Lee
-
Results: Schools send a written notice to parents if a child does not pass or needs a follow-up medical exam.
- Opt-Out: Parents can decline the screening in writing for religious reasons.
- Absent: If your child is out during the screening, they will be screened at another time.
As mentioned in Principal Prindle's letter above, all 5th and 6th grade students attended a virtual assembly on Friday 9/18 that reviewed this year’s amazing elective offerings. All student forms with their selections are due back to school by Thursday 9/24. Forms must be completed according to the packet directions and signed by a parent or guardian in order to be accepted.

School is better when your child is here! But we do understand that some days, they may feel unwell. Learn more about which symptoms are ok at school (like sneezing or sniffles), and when your child should stay home (if they have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, for example).
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify the school so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school public health nurse. Call the school as soon as you know your child will be absent and, if possible, let them know how long you think they will be out.
If you or your family need any kind of support, please reach out to our front office. We are here for you! Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:
-
Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
-
Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Alex Dilldine, School Testing Coordinator, at adilldine@fcps.edu by September 30.
Families are invited to attend AAP information meetings, led by Alina Delarosa, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):
-
AAP Continuum of Services: On September 9, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom, families learned about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS students. If you were unable to attend, click here, View Continuum of Academic Services Presentation, then scroll down to "Presentations."
-
Full-Time AAP Identification: November 5th 2026 at 7:00 PM via Zoom. (Link to be shared later). Families will learn about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.
For more information, please contact Alina Delarosa, AART, at amdelarosa@fcps.edu or visit the FCPS Advanced Academic Programs website.
