Dear Dranesville Families:

It is hard to believe we are already beginning our seventh week of the school year. By now, students, teachers, and families are settling into familiar routines, classrooms are fully engaged in learning, and fall activities are well underway. I enjoy seeing the energy across our Dranesville schools and hearing about the many ways students are learning, connecting, and getting involved. I look forward to spending time in our schools and connecting with students, staff, families, and community members.

I am also pleased to welcome two new principals to our Dranesville school community. Mr. Anthony Harris has joined Marshall High School, and Dr. Zadia Gadsden is leading Clearview Elementary School. I look forward to working with them and seeing their leadership in action throughout the year. Our principals play such an important role in shaping the culture of their schools, supporting teachers and staff, partnering with families, and creating environments where students can thrive.

Your questions, ideas, and experiences are important to my work on the School Board, so continue to reach out and stay engaged. Please take the time to fill out FCPS’ Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey. More information about the survey is below.

I hope your family has a wonderful October!

Regards,

Robyn

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns. The 5-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school. Questions- SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu

Traffic Safety Near Our Schools

We understand that families may need to drive their children to school from time to time. Please follow all signs and directions posted at schools, on public roads, or provided by school staff or crossing guards, and avoid making U-turns. Most of all, ALWAYS drive slowly near schools. The safety of all our students is one of our top priorities!!

Please drop off or pick up your students in the designated areas. Students should not be dropped off or picked up in other areas around the school or in nearby neighborhoods. Please also avoid parking in neighborhoods or double parking in front of your school if you intend to walk your child to school.

The Fairfax County Police Department has additional safety tips for families, including ways to keep walkers safe and what to do about scooters, bicycles, and e-scooters.

A Quantum Leap for Public Education: FCPS Plans to Host the World’s First K-12 Quantum Computer

FCPS Plans to Host the World’s First K-12 Quantum Computer

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is making history through a groundbreaking partnership with Connected DMV and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) that will bring an operational quantum computer directly to students at Skyview High School, creating a first-of-its-kind opportunity for K-12 public education.

This partnership creates a unique opportunity for FCPS students to work with an emerging technology as it moves from research laboratories into fields such as cybersecurity, medicine, materials science, finance, logistics, and national security.

YouTube Video of Quantum Computer Announcement

The quantum computer planned for Skyview is about the size of a small refrigerator and is designed for learning. Students will have hands-on experience with a technology that operates very differently from the computers we use every day. They will explore fundamental quantum concepts, test problems such as finding the most efficient way to organize a schedule, and compare how a quantum computer approaches a problem with how a traditional computer would solve it. Along the way, students will learn not only what quantum computing can do, but also its current limitations.

Share Your Comments on Proposed Head Start Changes

FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start provides high-quality early learning for qualifying children from 6 weeks through 4 years old. The programs help children build a strong foundation for kindergarten and supporting families. The proposed federal Head Start regulation changes would reduce or remove requirements related to administrative costs, staff language and cultural competency, curriculum and assessments, group sizes and ratios, health and mental health supports, services for children with disabilities, staff qualifications, eligibility self-attestation, mental health consultation, advisory committees, and quality-improvement coordination. Community members may review the proposal and submit public comments by October 6, 2026, through. Reducing Federal Burden for Head Start Programs.

FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers

FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Understanding the Acceptable Use Policy

FCPS provides students with digital tools and devices to support their learning, encourage easy collaboration, and help students learn how to interact with technology safely. The FCPS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) guides how these technologies are used both inside the classroom and at home. Learn more about digital citizenship at FCPS.

By following the AUP, students learn how to become not just users of technology, but responsible and ethical digital citizens with critical real-world skills such as:

  • Responsible Communication & Conduct: Communicating respectfully and using technology appropriately.
  • Digital Footprint Awareness: Understanding online actions can have lasting effects on a student’s reputation, future opportunities and relationships, career prospects, and safety.
  • Data Privacy & Security: Learning how online safety can protect their digital work and personal information, and guard against cybersecurity risks.
  • Self-Regulation: Learning to manage digital distractions to stay focused when needed.
  • Accountability: Understanding that they are responsible for how they use FCPS technology and digital resources.

5 Things to Know from the 2025-2026 Youth Survey

The Youth Survey monitors behavior trends and changes among our youth and helps inform prevention programs and interventions throughout the community. It is an anonymous and voluntary survey given each year since 2010 to FCPS students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. Sixth-grade students take a modified, shorter survey. In 2025, the Fairfax County Youth Survey questionnaire was reviewed and revised to improve its relevance, clarity, and usefulness.

A total of 28,103 students (65% of enrolled students) in grades 8, 10, and 12 participated in this year’s survey. An additional 11,334 students (83% of enrolled 6th graders) participated in the 6th grade survey.

5 Takeaways

  • Mental health among Fairfax County Youth continued to improve.
  • Rates of substance use among Fairfax County youth were lower than national rates.
  • Many students reported engaging in physical activities.
  • Some students spent over three hours per day using social media or playing video games.
  • The majority of Fairfax County Youth students reported having support at home, school, and in the community.

Digital Literacy Resources for Families

As part of FCPS’ continued support for digital literacy, families can access lesson materials that introduce the concepts students will explore throughout the school year. These resources include student lessons and supporting materials organized by grade level. Resources will be shared on a quarterly basis through Schoology.

The All Parent/Guardian Course is available in Schoology through a parent or guardian account. Schoology and ParentVUE use the same login credentials. Families who need assistance can review How Do I Log in to and Access Schoology? or watch the brief walkthrough on the Schoology Snippets page.

Families can also learn more about FCPS guidance and practices on the Educational Technology in FCPS webpage.
