Woodson Weekly is published every Monday to provide the community with important information about school life at Woodson High School.
Vision Statement
Carter G. Woodson High School is a community that embraces diversity in a culture of improvement and success that promotes academic curiosity and individual mental and physical growth.
Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Families,
Thank you so much for joining us at Back to School Night last Thursday! It was wonderful to feel the energy and buzz throughout the building as our staff and teachers connected with parents.
For those who were unable to attend—or if you would like a recap—here is the video that was shown during 3rd period. It provides an overview of the school year, highlights key initiatives and updates, and shares essential information regarding attendance and school policies.
This week, we are excited to host our annual Fall Hey Day! Our student clubs will be fundraising for the year by selling treats and gifts and running fun games. It is a fantastic way for our community to come together. (I am told I will be duct-taped to the wall again this year—I just hope we have enough tape to hold me!)
We are also thrilled to share an extraordinary opportunity that is truly unique to Woodson. At last year’s FCPS AI Challenge, student Joelle Rice earned an Honorable Mention award for her programming work. The FCPS AI Challenge is for students to develop solutions and apps using AI.
Impressed by her talent, PlayLab offered her an internship on the spot. Working with them throughout the spring and summer, Joelle developed learning modules that will now be used to train students for PlayLab competitions nationwide.
Joelle will be piloting these learning modules right here at Woodson after school in late September and early October. This is an opportunity for anyone to learn how to use AI well!
-
No Experience Needed: Any student can participate—no prior computer science knowledge or coding skills are necessary.
-
What Students Will Learn: How to use AI to build apps, produce media, and choose the best AI models for different situations.
-
Faculty Partner: Joelle will be bringing this program to our school alongside our computer science teacher, Travis Pugh.
This is an incredible achievement for Joelle and an amazing opportunity for our students. Please check out the flyer and RSVP to sign up.
Have a great week, Woodson!

Checking out early?
The best and most efficient way to check your student out of school early is to send a note with them to take to the Attendance Office in the morning!
Please be aware that if you sign your student out in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them, making sending a note the quickest option!
For emergencies or last-minute appointments, you can also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message.
Important Reminders:
-
Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts.
-
If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office. Please ask your child to go to the clinic if they are not feeling well.
PSAT/SAT October 7th
On Wednesday, October 7, all FCPS high schools will operate on a two-hour early release schedule. There is no school for 9th-grade students. Dismissal for upperclassmen is at 12:25 PM, followed by a grab-and-go lunch. Buses will depart at 12:55 PM.
High school academy courses and shuttles will be canceled on this day. FCPS will provide regular bus transportation in the morning and after the early release.
Prior to the test, students will complete a digital readiness check that includes an optional pre-survey. If you wish to opt your child out of the pre-survey, you must email Kathleen Crosson by Thursday September 17, 2025. You'll need to include your student's full legal name and FCPS Student ID number.
Additional information about the content of the pre-survey and opting your child out can be found on the SAT and PSAT Pre-Survey Opt-Out Policy webpage at https://www.fcps.edu/node/36639.
If you have questions about the PSAT/NMSQT or SAT School Day administration, please contact Kathleen Crosson, Woodson’s Student Testing Coordinator.

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:
-
Waive student course fees, reduced student parking pass, and waive senior fees.
-
Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.
To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.
The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.
Families who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals can receive breakfast and lunch at no cost for their children. This includes more than one-third of FCPS students. Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM) application before the start of each school year.
The application for FRM is now available for the 2026-27 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible children continue to receive meals at no cost.
Access the application and view criteria and up-to-date information on the FRM webpage. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.
