🎨 Sixth Grade Artists at Work

If you’ve visited Haycock, you’ve probably noticed our hallways are always filled with the beautiful artwork of our students! Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at some of that creativity in action as our sixth graders use watercolor paper and liquid watercolors to practice blending techniques and create the backgrounds for their collage art. 🖌️❤️

Dear Haycock Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. My family and I enjoyed seeing many Haycock families at Rodef Shalom’s services this weekend as we celebrated Rosh Hashanah. It’s wonderful to feel connected to this community in so many ways.

We have a very busy week ahead! Picture Day will take place on September 16 throughout the school day. Please let us know if you have any questions.

We’ll also have our first Principal’s Coffee on Friday, September 18, at 9:30 a.m. We hope to see many of you there as we share updates from the start of the year and introduce you to our administrative team and family liaison.

Our first PTA meeting is tonight. Please attend in person or virtually if you can. I’ve quickly realized that one of the things that makes Haycock so special is our parent community and involvement. Please participate in any way you can. Attending events like these and engaging with others is a great way to feel connected to and become part of the school community.

Important Haycock Reminders

First Parent Coffee of the Year - September 18th

Please join our Principal and Family Liaison on Friday, September 18th, from 9:30–10:30 a.m. in the library, for our first Parent Coffee of the year! Come meet our new principal, hear about the supports and resources available to Haycock families, and discover ways to get involved in our school community. We’ll also leave time for questions and conversation. We hope you can join us! 

Early Release Wednesday Information (Sept 30)

Our first Early Release Wednesday for this year is approaching. Students will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30. You will receive an email this week to confirm your child's dismissal plan.

Students who attend afternoon SACC will report there directly after dismissal. If you require childcare and your child needs to stay at school until normal dismissal, supervision will be provided by support staff until 4:05 p.m. No new instruction will take place during this time, so classroom teachers can participate in collaborative planning and professional development.

Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT)

All second-grade students will participate in the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT) this fall during the October 13th – November 13th testing window. Some students in grades 3–6 may also participate if they do not have a prior score on file or are completing a one-time parent-requested retake.

Families interested in requesting a one-time NGAT retake for a student in grades 3–6 must submit their request by Wednesday, September 30th. More information will be shared with participating families as we get closer to testing.

School IDs

Student ID cards are now required for bus riders. If your child is a regular bus rider, please have them wear the ID card (or attach it to their backpack) to school each morning. If students have been assigned to a bus, they will receive an ID card. If they are not regular bus riders, keep it at home in a safe place in case the need ever arises. NO student will be denied getting on the bus if they do not have their ID card.

Thank You to Our Summer Volunteers!

A huge thank you to the wonderful Haycock families who helped care for our school throughout the summer! From feeding our animals and watering plants to weeding our gardens and helping keep our outdoor spaces beautiful, we are so grateful for your time and care. 

Special thanks to Meredith Fath and her daughter Evie, who helped organize our volunteers and supported in so many ways; Yo Ok Kim and her daughters Alice and Chloe; Zhuo Zhang and her sons Jonathan and Vincent; and the Yang Family and their daughter Esme, who worked diligently to create the beautiful murals for our Three Sisters Garden.

Thank you for taking such wonderful care of Haycock this summer and for making our school community such a special place!

  • Superintendent Community Conversations

Join us for a series of Community Conversations that will be held across the school division. Share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. Click on the date to register for any of the following events:

Registration is not required, but it helps with planning. 

  • Reporting Discrimination or Harassment

FCPS is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for people of all races, national origins, and ethnicities. Individuals experiencing harassment or discrimination should report the incident as soon as possible. 

  • Importance of Strong Attendance HabitsSeptember is Attendance Awareness Month. Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:
  • Setting a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Laying out clothes and packing backpacks the night before.
  • Talking to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning, if they seem anxious about going to school.
  • Developing back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Avoiding medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

  • Stay in the Know With Here Comes the BusEven though FCPS has launched a new bus navigation system, some aspects like the new FCPS My Ride mobile app are still in development. Families should still use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to track the location of their child’s bus. This app is still compatible with the new system. 

FCPS will notify families and schools when the new app is ready to download and use. In the meantime, everyone should reinforce with students that they need to tap on and off the bus with their student ID cards.

Have you already downloaded the new app? That’s okay! The new app is in the final stage of testing, so some features are not yet fully functional. At this time, you should refer to Here Comes the Bus for the most accurate information.

  • The Importance of the Flu Vaccine

As we look ahead to the upcoming school year, the health and well-being of our students continues to be one of our priorities. Staying up to date with your child's flu vaccination helps:

  • Reduce School Absences: Keeping students healthy means more time spent learning and engaging with peers.
  • Protect the Community: Vaccination helps shield vulnerable family members and neighbors from seasonal illness.
  • Support Overall Wellness: Routine flu shots are a key component of a proactive student health plan.

Upcoming Flu Shot Events

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary.

Our sixth-grade artists took their learning outdoors, using Haycock’s beautiful gardens as real-life inspiration for their collage art! Students observed the colors, shapes, textures, and details around them as they gathered inspiration for their own creations. 🌿🎨
