 This week, we began our All School Morning Meeting! Every Wednesday, we gather as a community with a greeting, a share, an activity and news and announcements. It was fun to watch students move up to their new grade level section and see the excitement on their faces.

A Message from Ms. Consolla
Today, our hearts and thoughts are especially tuned toward remembrance as we reflect on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. Living so close to Washington, D.C., our local community was deeply impacted by the tragic events of that day. Moments like these remind us of the preciousness of life, the strength of our community, and the beauty of supporting one another. To all the active-duty military members, veterans, and first responders within our Fort Hunt family: we offer our deepest gratitude for your selflessness, courage, and daily service to keep us safe. You embody the very best of us, and we are forever grateful. We will never forget.
Our hearts are also filled with sadness upon hearing about the loss of a middle school student who was killed in a traffic accident while heading home after school. It is a reminder about how important it is to maintain and model safe behaviors, especially at dismissal. Today I saw several families crossing in between cars to get over to Toll Bridge Ct. As a community, we need to help each other out and give reminders to only cross at the crosswalk. Thank you to those families that are taking the time to cross there.
In our classrooms, our students are working hard on their beginning-of-year assessments in math and language arts. These assessments provide teachers with valuable information about students’ strengths and areas for growth and help us plan instruction that meets their needs.
Beginning next month, teachers will begin scheduling family conferences to share information about your child’s progress and, just as importantly, to hear about your hopes and dreams for your child this school year. Families are essential partners in our students’ success, and we look forward to these conversations. Be on the lookout for communication from your child’s teacher in the coming weeks with information about scheduling a conference.

No School-Monday, Sept 21
All FCPS schools, including Fort Hunt, will be closed on Monday, September 21 in observance of Yom Kippur.

💕New this year: Windows, Mirrors & Doors
Windows represent the opportunities we have to learn about different cultures, abilities and backgrounds. Mirrors represent the ability to see yourself and feel valued. It gives the viewer a sense of belonging which can help validate their own experiences and identities. Doors represent the opportunity to enter and engage with another culture for a moment in time.
September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. If you and/or your family came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, you are invited to bring in photos of you, your family, small artifacts and/or books. Astrid Mendez, our new Family Liaison, will work with you to create any descriptive labels you’d like to add. She can be reached at almendez@fcps.edu
This week, we are having grade level meetings to share expectations around behavior and safety.
The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Cellphones and Personal Devices
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device. 🎤Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Reid
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.
A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division. You are invited to share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. The closest event to Mount Eagle will be later this month.
Registration links will be shared soon. Childcare and interpretation services will be provided. Events are one-hour long and open to all. Find out about other opportunities to connect with Dr. Reid.

Updates to Technology in School
The Virginia legislature has passed a law updating what personal electronics are permitted in school. Starting this year, students must turn off and place in backpacks all personal electronics, including cell phones, smart watches, laptops, and wireless headphones. Students may not wear these items during the school day in the building.

Birthdays at Fort Hunt
Birthdays are a special day for children. Our PTA recognizes every child at the monthly Birthday Books & Cupcakes. Each child picks out a book to take home and a cupcake to enjoy at lunch.
Do not sent in any cupcakes, treats or items to pass out. Thank you!

Toys, Fidgets, Stuffies... Stay at Home
If your child has an accommodation for the use of a fidget in their IEP or 504 plan, we will provide a fidget for them. All toys, fidgets, stuffed animals, squishies, pop-its etc., need to stay at home even if they're small. Thank you for ensuring your student complies with this.

We are PET-Free on Our Campus
As a reminder, all FCPS campuses, including Fort Hunt, do not allow pets at any time or day of the week. This includes drop-off and afterschool pick-up. It's fine to wait up on the sidewalk on Linton Lane with your pet. This rule is in place to ensure all students feel safe and to keep our grounds clean. Thank you!

Get Involved with your PTA
Consider becoming a member of the Parent Teacher Association at Fort Hunt. It's a great way to connect with other parents, learn about how to support your child and to have fun at their amazing community events! There are many ways where you can share your voice, talents and time. Everyone working together makes this a great community. Check out the PTA website for more information.

It's available with translations. Click here to access it. Of course, if you have a question about a situation that is not listed, reach out to your child's teacher or an administrator.
