Dear Wonderful Navy Families,

It has been a busy week of MAP and iReady testing to better understand our students' current level of understanding with grade-level content. Our teachers will begin small group instruction next week, armed with the strengths and areas of growth for individual learners.

It has been wonderful seeing so many parents at the schoolhouse volunteering in the library and cafeteria, and even having lunch with their children. We would like to thank you for your support and creating lasting memories with your children.

Some may be wondering when the capital improvements for the STEAM lab will begin. Well, like all contractors, we are on their timeline! That being said, we will see our vision underway very soon to provide students with opportunities to extend and enrich the curriculum in science, math, and art. We are aiming high for our students, and that means taking extraordinary steps to ensure they have the opportunity to take their learning to new heights through exploration and creation in our new lab.

Finally, the Asha Jyothi 5K is next Sunday at Fairfax Corner. We would love to see you there to see how many Dolphins can beat me in the race! Please see the registration information for the 5K below.

Back To School Night Resources

So much great information, all in one place! Back to School Night is always an exciting and information-packed evening, and we know it can be a lot to take in at once. To make it easy to revisit everything shared, we have posted Back to School Night videos and resources on the Navy website. You’ll find messages from Dr. Reid, our School Board member, our wonderful administrative team, and our amazing PTO, along with core information slides from the county and our specialists. Counselor Corner

The school counselors have been visiting the classrooms to introduce themselves, their roles, and discuss the zones of regulation (identifying different emotions we may have at times, such as happy, sad, frustrated, angry, worried, etc.). In addition, the school counselors have also had lunch bunches with the new students at Navy to help them connect with other peers and feel more acclimated to the school. 

Navy Elementary School Picture Day is Coming! 📾

School Picture Day is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, 2026.

You can pre-order your child’s picture packages online today! Scan the code on the banner to access our school’s direct storefront ordering site.

Paper order flyers will also be sent home with students soon.

3 Hour Early Release Plan

We have responses from 62% of our families.

To help us prepare for our 3 hour early release days, all families need to complete the Google Form and select one plan for their child. The plan you choose will apply to all four early release days. You will need your child’s 7-digit student ID number and will indicate whether your child will:

  • Dismiss at 12:30 p.m., or
  • Remain at school until 3:30 p.m. due to a child care hardship.

After-school care: If your child normally attends after-school care, they will transition to their program at 12:30 p.m. This includes SACC and students who ride daycare buses.

We encourage families to save these dates and write down the option you select so you can easily remember your child’s early release plan throughout the 2026-2027 school year.

Asha Joythi 5k - Sign Up to Join Team Navy

All of the race registration comes back to Navy! Last year Asha Joythi awarded Navy with over $11,000 just for particpating in the race. We then wrote and were awarded a $50,000 grant that is being used to help start to create our STEAM lab at Navy.

Packet Pick up will conveniently located at Navy on September 18, right after school from 4:15 - 5:30. 

We currently have 45 people signed up for Team Navy! If we can hit 50, our school will earn a $1,000 bonus. That's amazing. We are in 5th place. Last year we broke the all time record with over 200 registrants!

Advanced Academic Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.

Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

  • Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
  • Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.

FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.

  • All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
  • Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
  • Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Kimberly Seck, School Testing Coordinator, at kaseck@fcps.eduv by September 30.

Families are invited to attend two AAP information meetings, led by Kristen Scudder, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):

  • AAP Continuum of Services: October 1, 2026, at 5:00 PM in the Navy ES cafeteria. Families will learn about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS students.
  • Full-Time AAP Identification: October 20, 2026, at 5:00 PM in Navy ES cafeteria. Families will learn about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.

Twice-Exceptional (2e) Programming

We’re excited to share information about Twice-Exceptional (2e) Programming available within our school system. Twice-exceptional students demonstrate advanced abilities while also experiencing learning, attention, or other challenges that may require additional support.

FLE Preview

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a comprehensive Family Life Education (FLE) program.  FLE instruction begins in kindergarten and continues through grade 12. FLE includes topics in human growth and development and social and emotional health.  FLE instruction helps students gain knowledge and skills needed to make healthy, responsible, and life-enhancing decisions related to relationships and their physical, emotional, and social health. Parents and guardians are partners in their child’s learning.  FLE instruction supports the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents and guardians can review FLE materials.  Parents/guardians can access FLE lessons in Schoology using their SIS username and password.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media titles online. Lessons and media are available for review at your child’s school.  Lessons only are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).

To foster respect for family choices, parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. A student who is opted out will receive alternative health instruction.  To opt your child out of all or part of the FLE program for this school year, please complete the digital opt-out form.  If you cannot access the digital opt-out form, contact your child’s school to request a printed form.  You do not need to complete the opt-out form, digital or printed, if you wish for your child to take part in FLE instruction.

FLE lessons will be available for you to preview in the library prior  to BTSN in the library. 

Required Safety Drills

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures for how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly
practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills
regularly. 

Fire drills are held once a month, starting in August and continuing 
through June. Tornado drills are required once a year during March.

Lockdown drills are completed twice during the school year. One lockdown
drill is held during the first 20 days of school and one additional drill after the first 60 days of the school year to be held in January or February.  Pre-K and K students are exempt from mandatory participation during the first 60 days of school. 

The first lockdown drill will be held at Navy soon. The drills are instruction and classroom based and do not include any scenario training.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community and we thank you  for your help to keep our school safe.   

Join Girls on the Run!

Registration is now open for the Girls on the Run program at Navy Elementary School. By using a curriculum that creatively integrates physical activity with life lessons, Girls on the Run empowers girls to develop the confidence and character they need to become strong and healthy young adults. Registration for the Fall 2026 program is open August 17 - September 14, and the season will run from the week of September 21 through November 22. GOTR NOVA's incurred cost per girl is $305; however, the standard registration fee is $225. GOTR NOVA offers adjusted program fees based on a sliding scale according to family income.
