The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! All Bucknell families received an e-Notify email this morning with information about upcoming academic screening and growth assessments. These assessments are an important tool for helping teachers, school staff, and families better understand each student’s academic strengths and areas where additional support may be helpful. Results are used to guide instruction, monitor student growth, and determine whether a student may benefit from additional reading or math support.
At Bucknell, assessments vary by grade level. PreK–2 students participate in literacy screening through VALLSS, while PreK–K students also complete early mathematics and school-readiness assessments; students in Grades 1–2 take MAP Math. Students in Grades 3–6 participate in MAP Math and iReady Reading, with some students also participating in VALLSS based on their reading performance data. These screenings generally take place throughout the fall, winter, and spring, and teachers will determine specific testing dates for their classes.
We encourage families to review the e-Notify message for more detailed information about the assessments their child will take. If you have questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher or our school testing coordinators, Molly Rumberger (mdrumberger@fcps.edu) and Chanel Favors (gcfavors@fcps.edu).

- Talking to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning, if they seem anxious about going to school.
