Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
A few short areas of focus this week:
3rd grade pre-writing and writing: Students across 3rd grade were analyzing folk and fairy tales, poetry and song lyrics to identify common and divergent themes. They used strategies like a Venn Diagram or writing extension such as but, so, to add detail to their analysis. If you have a 3rd grader, ask your child what they wrote about. A child in another grade? Consider asking about a connection between a bedtime story you have read and a movie you have watched!
Back to School Night: Next Wednesday night is BTSN (see schedule below). To support family use of this time it is important to have a sense of its purpose. Open House is for students and families. It serves as a quick meeting and greet with the teacher, some peers, and to know where the room is located. BTSN is for families (not students) to spend a bit more time in the classroom related to Morning Meeting, Responsive Classroom, grade level curriculum and then time with the full grade levels team related to grade level norms and expectations, other staff who work with your student, and a moment with a PTA board member. Neither Open House or BTSN are built for individual conversations about a student. We do encourage families to schedule a conference time with your student’s teacher in the fall when that 1-1 time is available.
For those who have children riding school buses, we appreciate your support of the transition to using badges and the delays this might cause the first days while students and drivers get used to this new system.

Celebrations
Last week we shared our Stronger Together Google Form to submit your recognition of a staff member or student who is contributing to making us “Stronger Together”. When visiting the school, please take a moment to notice our growing chain in the lobby. This morning on the Roadrunner Report, Mrs. Burns celebrated Mrs. Emerson’s class’ welcoming spirit, Ms. Ross celebrated the K/1 cafeteria patrols who help with PM dismissal, and Mr. Clancy celebrated Paisley and Penelope who raise and lower the flags each day!

Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 16:
- K and 1st grades: 5:00-5:45 pm
- 2nd and 3rd grades: 6:00-6:45 pm
- 4th, 5th, and 6th grades: 7:00-7:45 pm

Safety Drills During the School Year
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and extreme weather. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.
The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.
Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your child before and after school lockdown drills.

Parent Digital Consent: Families must grant consent for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool is accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account credentials, but please note that it is separate from the forms in the ParentVUE app). Parents can easily opt their child in or out of a variety of resources, including online educational tools, school counseling services, and more.

Opt In or Out of Student Devices Being Sent Home for Grades 1-6: New this year in FCPS, families can opt out of having student laptops sent home with their student. This primarily affects our 5th and 6th grade students, as students in the younger grades at Marhsall Road do not usually bring their devices home.
- If you do not want your student to bring their FCPS-issued device home, please toggle the Opt Out button to a check mark and confirm by clicking “Save Selection.”
- If you would like your student to bring their FCPS device home, no toggle action is needed. Confirm by clicking “Save Selection.”
- Students whose families opt out will continue to have access to an FCPS-issued device during the school day. Please reach out to your student’s teacher to understand expectations for homework and any learning activities that may require access to technology outside of the school day.

Early Release Wednesdays
As we shared last week, there will be four three-hour early release days for elementary schools. The dates for MRES are: September 30, November 18, January 13, and April 7. If you need childcare on these days, complete this form or through the Online Verification/Update (OVU) packet in SIS ParentVUE.

Future Cougar Night

Full-Time AAP Identification: October 8th, 6:00-7:00 pm in the library. Families of students in 2nd-6th grade will learn about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.

Staff Spotlight - Brandon Dawson
I am a CSS Kindergarten-Second Grade Special Education Teacher. I have been at Marshall Road for one year and I am excited for more! My favorite food is pizza. In my free time I like to go to the gym, listen to podcasts, and play with my dog. I love being a member of the MRES family because we all love working together to make sure all the children’s needs are met. Everyone is always willing to help each other when they need it.

Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Reid
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.
A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division. You are invited to share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. Events are planned for the following dates at 6:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted):
