September 8, 2026 Lancer Times

Tuesday, September 8, 2026

Dear Lancer Families,

We are continuing with a wonderful start to the school year! Our hallways and classrooms have felt calm, welcoming, and full of positive energy as students have settled into their routines, built relationships with teachers and classmates, and begun engaging in learning. We appreciate the support of our families in helping make the transition back to school so smooth and are proud of the way our students have embraced the expectations and opportunities of a new year.

As we continue to settle into the year, we have several exciting events and opportunities on the horizon. Our after-school program begins Monday, September 14, providing students with additional opportunities for academic support, enrichment, activities, and connection beyond the school day. Please see more information about how to sign up for the after school program below. We also have school pictures coming up through your students’ HPE class, as well as our annual 7th-grade MWEE field trip, where students will extend their science learning through a meaningful, hands-on experience at Burke Lake.

Please continue to watch our newsletters and school communications for additional details and important dates. We are excited about the weeks ahead and grateful for your continued partnership! Please reach out to us if you have any questions.

Chris Butzer
Principal, Longfellow MS

Weapons Screening at Football Games

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is taking additional steps this year to help ensure that our athletic events remain safe for students, families, staff, and community members by introducing security screenings of all spectators at our varsity football games.

We will be using the existing weapons screening systems that our students pass through every morning in our schools. In addition, we will be implementing a standardized bag policy to help support a smooth and efficient entry process. Students, family members, and all spectators are reminded that the following items are prohibited:

Backpacks
Purse
Fanny pack
Tote bags
Outside food and beverage
Sporting equipment (balls, bats, sticks, etc.)
Any item prohibited by FCPS policy, or determined by event staff to present safety concerns

Approved bags are limited to:
Clear plastic, vinyl, or pvc bags no larger than 12”6”x12”
Small clutch bag no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”
Medical and diaper bags permitted but subject to inspection

The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

The FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.
The first goal of the strategic plan focuses on each and every student having a strong start in FCPS. Whether they’re joining us in preschool or in high school, we want our students to be set up for success.

See how Goal 1 is being put into practice. Learn more about or enroll in FCPS Pre-K or Early Head Start.

Weather Happens, FCPS Is Ready

Virginia is no stranger to inclement weather. From severe thunderstorms to high winds to flooding, many different types of weather events can (and sometimes do) impact our schools. FCPS has a plan for each of these scenarios that prioritizes the safety of all our students and staff. What does FCPS do during a flood? What about a severe thunderstorm?

Learn how FCPS prepares for and responds to weather events, and find resources to help your family prepare, on the FCPS Weather Safety webpage.

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and extreme weather. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your child before and after school lockdown drills.

⚠️ Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or families have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

Your Child’s Presence at School Matters

The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success by helping them build good habits.

If you or your family need any kind of support, please reach out to our front office. We are here for you! Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

Help Keep Our School Distraction-Free

Please remind your student that personal electronic communication or computing devices should be off and personally stored (i.e. backpacks) for the duration of the school day — bell to bell. This includes:
     o Personal laptops and tablets.
     o Smartphones and smartwatches.
o Other personal electronic communication or computing devices.

If you need to reach your student during the school day, please call our main office at 703-533-2600. Learn more about the FCPS Cellphone Policy and Device Policy.

LONGFELLOW PTA

Thank You, Longfellow Families!

It was wonderful to see so many families at Back-to-School Night! Thank you to everyone who joined the PTA and supported Support Excellence.
We’re now at 109 PTA members and have raised $2,000 toward our $30,000 Support Excellence goal.

Haven’t joined or donated yet? A quick reminder that middle school PTA keeps it simple: no individual classroom fees, no room-parent collections, and no series of fundraising drives planned. We ask families at the beginning of the year to:
     1. Join the PTA — $25 per member
     2. Make a Support Excellence donation if you can

Your support helps fund Lancer Bucks and student incentives, teacher appreciation, and teacher and classroom support throughout the year.
Thank you for helping us fund the year now so we can keep middle-school fundraising simple!

Join, donate, or do both through Givebacks
