Our Navy students have been busy creating, moving, making music, exploring books, and growing together! Check out our Quarter 1 Specials Newsletter for a peek at what students are learning in Art, PE, Music, Strings, Library, and more. You’ll also find an update from our school counselors and important dates to save.
This first quarter, our top priority is building a warm, supportive classroom community where every student feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
To guide our daily habits, we follow our Navy S.T.A.R. expectations—reminding us to be Safe, Thoughtful, Attentive, and Responsible in everything we do. To help us shine as Navy STARS and growing thinkers, we are introducing our Brain Toolbox:

Heart Tools: Social-emotional tools that help us manage our feelings, practice empathy, and build strong friendships (using kind words, and showing a helping hand).

Mind Tools: Thinking strategies that help us tackle tricky problems, stay focused, and stretch our brains (like asking big questions, and exploring new points of view). By using our Heart and Mind tools to show our Navy S.T.A.R. expectations, we are setting a strong foundation for a fin-tastic year of learning!
Kindergarten: Artists are using shapes to draw self-portraits. Next, they will explore 3D forms using modeling clay and ceramic clay.
1st Grade: Artists are drawing family portraits while learning about size relationships, backgrounds, and groundlines. Next, they will create a collage of a robot designed to help their family with everyday tasks.
2nd Grade: Artists are drawing portraits of themselves with a friend while learning about overlapping. Soon, they will explore paper in a new way by weaving painted papers on a curved loom.
3rd Grade: Artists are learning about facial proportions while drawing realistic self-portraits. Next, they will create an eagle painting that will be displayed at Navy’s annual breakfast for veterans and their families.
4th Grade: Artists are drawing portraits of themselves in the future while learning about body proportions. This will lead into gesture drawing and a wire sculpture unit showing figures in motion.
5th Grade: Artists are creating contour drawings of their shoes with backgrounds representing their interpretation of a “memorable journey.” Next, they will research natural landscapes for a painting unit.
6th Grade: Artists are using oil pastels and shading techniques to create a still life of objects that represent them. Next, they will use ceramic clay to create self-portrait sculptures.
EAC: Artists are using different shapes and lines to explore a variety of art materials. Each project this year is based on a book read at the beginning of class.

Hola, families!
In FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School), we always start the school year reviewing topics such as routines/expectations, touring the classroom, asking/responding to what’s your name, asking/responding to how are you feeling and colors/numbers in Spanish with all K-6th grade.
Hispanic Heritage Celebration- September 15-October 15
During this special time, we will be celebrating awesome contributions from famous poets, authors, leaders and more from Hispanics/Latinos/ Latinx around the world!
Just like last year, we will have special surprises for our students! This year, we will be dedicating topics for each week: clothing, food, music, and celebrations.
Stay tuned for our Hispanic Heritage parade and more live music beats and rhythm coming later on this school year.
Kindergarten-3rd Grade: Students are learning class routines and how to create personal space. They are practicing teamwork, sportsmanship, and cooperation while developing kicking and dribbling skills.
4th-6th Grade: Students are demonstrating active effort through class routines and learning to set fitness goals. They are beginning their start-of-the-year fitness testing and practicing kicking, dribbling, passing, and team sports.
Kindergarten: Our newest musicians are getting to know music class through introductory activities with singing, instruments, and movement.
1st Grade: Students are getting back into school routines with introductory activities for singing, instruments, and movement.
2nd & 3rd Grade: Students are returning to music class routines while learning about the basics of instruments and creative movement.
4th & 5th Grade: Our young musicians are sharing what they know about instruments and creative movement while learning to collaborate with others.
6th Grade: Our musicians are exploring creative movement with their peers and learning about instruments in the music classroom
4th Grade: Strings students are learning how to read music, hold their instruments properly, and play their first notes!
5th Grade: Strings students are learning how to tune their instruments while reviewing what they learned in 4th Grade Strings.
6th Grade: Strings students are learning notes on all the strings of their instruments while reviewing what they learned in 5th Grade Strings.
Save the Dates: Strings concerts are scheduled for December 10 and June 10 at Franklin Middle School.
Welcome back Navy families! Band is off to a great start. All students should have their instruments and know what day they have band. I'm excited to get started making music! Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns jdporter@fcps.edu.
Kindergarten: We are excited to welcome our new kindergarten friends to the Navy Library! Students are having fun, checking out books, and learning library procedures.
1st Grade: Students are reviewing library routines and procedures while checking out amazing books.
2nd Grade: Students are reviewing library routines and expectations and learning how to check out their own books.
3rd Grade: Students are back in the library, reviewing routines and procedures and discovering new books to check out.
4th Grade: Students are reviewing library procedures and routines while checking out some amazing books.
5th Grade: Students are reviewing library procedures and routines. We have also added audiobooks to our collection, and students are excited!
6th Grade: Students are reviewing library routines and procedures and are excited to check out the new audiobooks in our collection.
Our school counselors support students with their academic, career, and social-emotional development. They help students problem-solve and navigate their feelings so they can be successful in and outside of school.
Quarter 1 lesson topics include:
- Introduction to school counseling
- Feelings and Zones of Regulation
- Responsibility
Counseling services include individual counseling, small-group counseling, lunch bunches, classroom lessons, conflict resolution, school-wide programs, and collaboration with teachers, administrators, and families.
When students meet with a school counselor, they can expect confidentiality, active listening, empathy and care, no judgment, a safe space, and access to helpful resources, tools, and referrals.
