September 10 (7:00 PM) - First Home Football Game
After Celebrate McLean, join us for the first home football game of the season on September 10th at 7:00 PM where our Highlanders face off against the Falls Church Jaguars.
September 11 - National Day of Service and Rememberance
With the upcoming 25th anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.
All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Middle and high school students can learn more about service learning by logging into their Naviance account to access x2VOL.
September 11 - Rosh Hashanah (Evening Observance)
Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, September 11. That day is an evening-only observance day. Important events will not be held after school.

Save the date! Class of 2027 Graduation Ceremony is on Tuesday, June 8, 2027, at 10:00 AM at DAR Constitution Hall.
Student Achievement
Do you know a student, club, or team that has done something amazing? We want to hear about it! We're looking for accomplishments big or small to feature on the school website and in our weekly newsletter. Whether it's an academic achievement, an athletic victory, a creative project, or an act of community service, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible things happening at McLean. Back-to-School Information
Morning Entry Update: Door #9 and Cafeteria Flow
To help prevent morning congestion and to keep student entry moving efficiently, we have made a minor adjustment to our weapons screening process at the rear of the building near The Rock and tennis courts.
Students entering from the back of the building should continue to approach Door #9 as usual. Staff members stationed at Door #9 will direct students into the adjacent Door #10, which opens directly into the cafeteria.
This new setup will allow our team to operate more efficiently and keep lines moving smoothly. Thank you for your cooperation as we work to make morning entry safe and hassle-free!
Student ID Card Distribution for Bus Riders Continues
ID card distribution for school bus riders will continue during student lunches in the cafeteria. Please note that this round of distribution is exclusively for students who use FCPS transportation services.
ID cards should be worn or attached to your child’s backpack daily, and students should begin tapping their cards as they board and exit the bus. We appreciate your patience as bus drivers begin checking in students, which may add a little extra time to stops. The transportation team is working hard to minimize any potential delays.

Help Keep Our School Phone-Free: Updates to the FCPS Cellphone Policy
Please remind your student that high schoolers can no longer use their cellphones and other devices during lunch time, and that students must use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day.
Personal electronic communication or computing devices must be off and personally stored (such as in a backpack) for the duration of the school day. This includes personal laptops and tablets, smartphones and smartwatches, and other similar devices.

Wednesday Workshop
 Wednesday Workshop Returns!
We are excited to announce the kick-off of Wednesday Workshop this Wednesday, September 9th. Students interested in receiving support in the core subjects and executive functioning are invited to attend Wednesday Workshop! Staff, in addition to peer tutors will be available to support students in the academic content areas. Late bus transportation is provided, buses depart at 4:45 PM.

Schedule Change Deadline - Friday, September 11
Per our schedule change policy, the deadline for our primary window to make a schedule change is this Friday, September 11. All changes are subject to class availability. Additions to AP and DE courses are no longer permitted. Elective changes must be completed within this primary window. After September 11, we will have a pause on schedule changes until October 5, at which point we will process level changes only (i.e. AP to Honors, Honors to non-Honors). SEL Screener (Fall Administration) - Wednesday, October 14
The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in October. Students complete the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. At McLean High School, students in grades 9-12 will take the fall administration of the SEL Screener on Wednesday, October 14 during Advisory.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Community Conversations with Superintendent Reid
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.
A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division. You are invited to share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. Events are planned for the following dates at 6:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted):
- Wednesday, September 16, 6:45 p.m., at McNair Elementary School
- Monday, September 28, at Riverside Elementary School
- Monday, October 19, at Spring Hill Elementary School
- Monday, October 26, at Beech Tree Elementary School

- Friday, November 13, at Colin Powell Elementary School

2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12
The FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Event Details: The College Fair is designed to connect high school students with opportunities in postsecondary education. It is one of the largest College Fairs in the region. It features 200 colleges and universities from around the nation and representatives from the U.S. Service Academies. Each year the College Fair draws thousands of students and their families.
Special Education Conference
The Annual Special Education Family Conference will take place on Saturday, November 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Hayfield Secondary School.
Hosted by FCPS and community partners, its theme — Connected Communities, Thriving Students — highlights the power of partnerships that support student success. This no-cost, in-person event brings together families, staff, and community partners to explore special education services, supports, and resources and to build meaningful connections.
The conference will feature an inspiring opening session, engaging breakout sessions, an exhibitor hall, and lunch for all participants. Visit the Special Education Family Conference webpage for the latest information.
