First Days of School at Rose Hill!
What a wonderful first two weeks we have had welcoming our students back into the building! The energy, smiles, and excitement have filled our hallways from day one.
Our amazing teachers hit the ground running—focusing on establishing clear expectations and daily routines, and jumping right into the curriculum without missing a beat. It has been a joy seeing our returning students reunite, greeting families new to Rose Hill, and welcoming our newest little learners in Preschool and Kindergarten.
On that very first day, as the Kindergarteners were walking into the cafeteria, one little student looked around in awe and exclaimed, "Wow, this is so big! And we get to sit on circle seats!" It completely warmed my heart and reminded me of the magic of a new school year.
We are currently working on building our students' stamina and resilience for full days of learning and routine. I’m sure many of you noticed just how tired your kids were by the end of that first week! Rest assured, they are adapting wonderfully, and this school year holds so much promise, growth, and joy for our entire RHES community. Early Release Wednesdays - Action Needed
Elementary school staff are expected to deliver high-quality, personalized instruction in math, reading, writing, social studies, and science while staying current with research-based best instructional practices. To provide dedicated and appropriate planning time, Rose Hill has four Early Release Wednesdays. They are:
- September 30
- November 18
- January 13
- April 7
To help Rose Hill plan for staffing and supervision of students who might be staying, please let us know by completing the ParentVUE Online Verification/Update (OVU) Packet ParentVUE Online Verification/Update (OVU) Packet by Friday, September 25. Once you access the packet, you will see an Early Release Days Child Care Options. Choose the option that best reflects your current plans. After submitting your answer, if changes are needed, contact Rose Hill directly to update your response.
If you do not let us know that your child is staying, we will assume that they are going home by their normal modality at 1:00pm or we will call and ask you to pick them up.

Help Keep Rose Hill Drive Safe & Clear!
We need our entire community’s help to make arrival and dismissal safer for everyone. Parking along Rose Hill Drive creates severe traffic gridlock and dangerous conditions for our students, buses, and neighbors.
When vehicles park in travel lanes, bike lanes, or near intersections, it violates local Fairfax County traffic laws and puts our children directly in harm's way:

Blocking Crosswalks & Bike Lanes: Parking is strictly prohibited in bike lanes (which are legally travel lanes) and within 20 feet of a crosswalk. Vehicles parked here force children riding bikes or scooters onto sidewalks and neighbor lawns while severely reducing pedestrian visibility.

Obstructing School Buses & Transit: Cars parked in bike lanes block public bus stops (which require 60 feet of clear space on approach and 10 feet after) and force our school buses to cross double yellow lines into oncoming traffic to pass.

Creating Dangerous Intersections: Parking close to the Apple Tree Drive intersection blocks drivers from turning safely. County law requires vehicles to park at least 30 feet away from stop signs and 20 feet away from intersections.

Gridlock & Hazards: Mid-street U-turns and passengers stepping into active roadway lanes create total traffic standstills and risk severe collisions.
How You Can Help:

Use the Kiss & Ride Line: Follow the designated Kiss & Ride loop for a quick, safe, and organized drop-off and pick-up.

Park in the Surrounding Neighborhood: If you need to walk your student to the doors, legally park on adjacent neighborhood side streets where parking is allowed—just be mindful not to block neighbors' driveways.

Safety Drills During the School Year
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and extreme weather. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.
The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.
Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your child before and after school lockdown drills.
This Wednesday we invite you to join us for Back to School Night at Rose Hill. This is a time for parents/guardians to learn about the curriculum, schedules, Schoology, and much more! There are two sessions so that you have the option to attend at the time that works best for you. Session 1 is at 5:05 and session 2 is at 5:35.

Help Keep Our School Distraction-Free
Please remind your student that personal electronic communication or computing devices should be off and personally stored (i.e. backpacks) for the duration of the school day — bell to bell. This includes:
- Personal laptops and tablets.
- Smartphones and smartwatches.
- Other personal electronic communication or computing devices.
