Good afternoon, Irving Community,
Thank you for joining us for Back to School Night on Wednesday! It was wonderful to have our families in the building, connecting with teachers and getting a sense of what your students experience throughout the school day. Thank you also to everyone who visited the Irving PTA table and became a member. If you were unable to attend or missed the opportunity, you can still join using this link.
This week, students reviewed important sections of the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) and continued learning about our Irving MS ROCK expectations: Responsibility, Ownership, Communication, and Kindness. Each of these values is essential to building the positive and inclusive school culture we want for every student.
Throughout the year, we will place a special emphasis on kindness. During Advisory, students will have opportunities to read, write, think, and discuss how kindness applies in real-world situations. We will encourage students to reflect on how the ways we speak to and about one another matter and how our words can have a lasting impact. Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce these important values at home and throughout our community.

Recognize Irving MS Staff through FCPS CARES

The FCPS CARES Program allows parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees who go above and beyond to help others and show they care about their students, colleagues, and the community.
Yondr Pouch: Personal Devices in School
All Irving MS students will receive a Yondr pouch to use throughout the school year. Eighth-grade students received their pouches during Advisory on September 3, and seventh-grade students will receive theirs by the end of this week.
Each morning, students will place their cell phones, smartwatches, AirPods, and other personal electronic devices in their Yondr pouch. At the end of the school day, students will unlock their pouches and regain access to their devices.
Each student is assigned a uniquely numbered pouch and is responsible for keeping it in good condition and bringing it to school each day. Lost or damaged pouches may be replaced for $20 through MySchoolBucks.
Fall Full-Time AAP Referral Window for Students New to FCPS Closes on October 15
The fall referral window is only for students in Grades 3-8 who are new to FCPS since January 1, 2026. Parents and guardians who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services must submit the Full-Time AAP Referral Form to Katie Richter, Irving’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at kerichter@fcps.edu by October 15, 2026. Late referrals will not be accepted.
For students who are not new to FCPS and have been enrolled, the spring Full-Time AAP identification window is open to students in Grades 2-7. Families interested in referring their student for consideration during the spring window must submit a referral by December 15, 2026.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time AAP services.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology

What is TJHSST?
A FCPS regional Governor’s high school (9-12th grades) for students interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). You can view the TJ Admissions Video on their website, www.fcps.edu/tjadmissions. We strongly encourage you to view their YouTube admissions video prior to attending this meeting.
Eligibility to Apply (8th grade):
(1) Residency requirement-FCPS is included
(2) Completed a full-year course of Algebra 1, OR be currently enrolled in a full-year course of HONORS-level Algebra 1 or higher math
(3) Be enrolled in HONORS science
(4) Be enrolled in HONORS social studies OR English OR be identified as a “Young Scholar”
(5) Have a 3.5 or higher GPA in all core academic courses (Math, Science, Social studies, English, and if taken for high school credit, World Language) at the time of application.

Remember to Complete Permission Forms for School Resources
Families can now easily grant consent for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account login. Parents can easily opt their child in or out of a variety of resources, including online educational tools, school counseling services, and more.

Safety First: Essential Guidelines for Pedestrians, E-Bike, and Scooter Riders
As students return to the classroom, The Fairfax County Police Department is reminding drivers and families that keeping our students safe is a shared responsibility. Whether you're behind the wheel, walking to school, waiting at the bus stop, or riding a bike or scooter, staying alert and following the rules of the road can help everyone start the school year safely.
Keep these safety reminders in mind throughout the school year:
Pedestrian Safety
- Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks whenever possible.
- Look left, right, and left again before crossing and stay alert.
- Children should walk with a responsible adult whenever possible.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing especially during early morning or low-light conditions
- Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing when possible.
Driving Around Schools
- Slow down and obey posted school-zone speed limits.
- Stay alert for children at crosswalks, sidewalks, and bus stops.
- Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and keep crosswalks and intersections clear. Put your phone away and keep your attention on the road.
School Bus Safety
- Be prepared to stop when a school bus activates its flashing lights.
- Stop for buses with flashing red lights and extended stop arms unless a positive median separates the roadway.
- Never pass a stopped school bus when you are required to stop.
- Watch for children entering or exiting the bus and crossing the roadway.
Bike, Scooter & E-Scooter Safety
- Wear a properly fitted helmet every time you ride.
- Follow traffic laws, signs and signals.
- Stay alert for vehicles, pedestrians, and other riders.
- Check your brakes, tires, and lights before riding.
- Use bike lanes or designated paths when available.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing to stay visible.
- Keep both hands available for safe operation and put your phone away while riding.
Whether you're driving, walking, biking, riding a scooter or taking the bus, stay alert, make safe choices and look out for one another. A safe school year starts with all of us.

The After School Program is designed to support academic achievement, foster personal interests and talents, and initiate positive social experiences for all students. Register here.
After School Information
The After School Program runs 5 days a week unless noted. Monday through Thursday, our clubs and activities will run in two activity blocks (2:25 pm to 3:25 pm and 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm) with late buses; late buses arrive after 4:30 pm; FAB Fridays are 2:15 pm to 3:30 pm (dates TBD). The club schedule will vary by day and week, the most up-to-date schedule will be posted in the “After School” section in the student portal and Schoology. Students may not leave school and return for the after school program.
In order to sign up for a club, students must sign up using the Weekly Signup located in the After School Program folder located in the Schoology All Students Course and the After School section of the student portal.
Students may participate in as many clubs as they want. We encourage them to try something new as part of the After School Program!
ALL athletic activities and clubs require athletic footwear to participate, locker rooms are not guaranteed during the After School Program.

Middle School SportsFCPS offers middle school cross country in the fall, volleyball in the winter and outdoor track & field in the spring. Any current FCPS middle school student, enrolled in at least five courses, who is in good standing at their school, and is eligible to participate in the middle school after school program.
Students and parents will need to complete several steps prior to participating in middle school sports, including:

Confirmation Email: You will receive a confirmation email directly from FinalForms. This email will be sent to the address currently listed in your ParentVUE account.

Act Quickly: The setup link inside the FinalForms confirmation email expires, so please complete your account setup as soon as possible.

ParentVUE Required: If you do not have an active ParentVUE account, your student-athlete cannot be registered. Setting up a new ParentVUE account and receiving the FinalForms email takes up to one business week, so please verify that your ParentVUE account is up to date immediately.

Practice Clearance: All requirements in FinalForms must be complete and accurate. Students will not be cleared to practice if information is missing or incorrect. Please allow our Athletic Coordinator, Mr. Brown, time to review and communicate your student-athlete’s clearance status.
