Family Engagement Calendar

Friday, September 4, and Monday, September 7, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.

Dear Frost Families,

Thank you for joining us at Back-to-School Night! It was wonderful to see so many new and returning families in our building. We enjoyed the opportunity to welcome you, share information about the school year, and help you connect with our staff and school community.

If you were unable to attend, please take a moment to view the presentation, which includes a welcome message from our local school board members, administrative team and other key members of our staff.

We experienced a technical difficulty at Back To School Night that prevented the parents who wished to preview the Family Life Education lessons from doing so.  We offer our apologies for that.  If you wish to preview the Family Life Education lessons, instructions on how to access them through your Parent Schoology Course can be found here.  (Note, the same lessons are available for in-person preview at any Fairfax County Public Library as well).

If you wish to opt-out your child from any of the lessons, please do so through accessing the Parent Digital Consent System.

Join us on September 17 from 7:15–8:30 a.m. for a Middle School Bootcamp for Parents. We will review the nuts and bolts of supporting your student’s academics, common challenges in a middle schooler’s journey, strategies to support them at home, and who to contact when you have questions or concerns. You’ll also receive an overview of helpful platforms—including ParentVUE, Schoology, TalkingPoints, and Lightspeed. We hope to see you there!

Friendly Reminders!

• Kiss-n-Ride: Please drop off/pick up your students on the sidewalk that runs along the building. Students should not be dropped off on Pickett Road and U-turns on Pickett Road are NOT allowed. Please help us keep our students safe by following this guidance.
• Picking up Students: If you plan to pick up students in the middle of the school day, please send your student with a written note to the front office. Your student will receive a checkout pass and be ready to go in the office by the time you arrive. Checkout passes will not be issued for messages left on the attendance line or e-mailed. If it is an unplanned pick up, please call the office around 10 minutes before arriving to the building so the student can be called down without missing too much class instruction. 
  • After 2:00pm, students will not be called down to the office. You must wait for your student in Kiss and Ride until the 2:15 dismissal bell. 
  • PLEASE NOTE: Buses will arrive starting 1:30pm and will block the visitor spaces until they leave at 2:30. If you plan to arrive between 1:30-2:30, please park parallel on Pickett Road right outside the parking lot.

• Student Item Drop-offs: You are welcome to drop-off items for your student on the black shelves in the vestibule at Door 1. We understand that sometimes our students can forget or miss something in their rush to get to school. The main office staff will refrain from calling into class instructional time for item pick-ups. Students are welcome to come check with the main office for anything they believe might be dropped off during class transitions, lunch, or when their teacher permits. Please discuss this procedure with your student.

TJHSST Admissions Presentation on 9/16

Current 8th Grade Parents/Guardians and Students: TJHSST Freshman Application Information Session

Attention parents/guardians and students, current 8^th grade students who have an aptitude and passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) are encouraged to apply for admission to the Class of 2031 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) beginning on Monday, October 5th at 4:00pm (Freshman Round Calendar). The application portal, course prerequisites, GPA requirements, and deadlines can be found here: TJHSST Application Information.  Some important points about the application process are included below, but it is essential that you review the TJHSST Freshman Application Process if you wish to apply.  TJHSST will host an information session in the Lecture Hall at Frost MS on September 16th from 2:45pm to 3:45pm. This is open to current 8th grade students who are interested in applying, and students who attend the session will be able to ride the late bus home. Parents and guardians of current 8^th grade students are welcome to attend this event as well. Parents attending this event will need to enter the building through the Main Office (Door #1) to sign in and then head down the hall to the Lecture Hall where the meeting is being held.

If you have any questions about the TJHSST admissions process, make sure you review the TJ Admissions website thoroughly, and plan to attend the admissions information session at Frost MS on September 16th. We hope to see you there! If you are unable to attend the admissions information session being held at Frost MS, please refer to the TJ Admissions website for the complete list of dates and locations for TJ Admissions Fall Presentation Sessions which are open to the public and being held throughout the county.

TJHSST Eligibility Requirements:

• Students must be enrolled in the following courses in grade 8:
  • Algebra 1 Honors or higher-level math
  • Honors Science
  • One additional honors course in Social Studies or English, or student is identified as a Young Scholar
• Minimum GPA is 3.5. This GPA is for final unweighted marks in 7th grade for math, science, English, social studies, and World Language (if for high school credit) as well as 1st quarter 8th grade for the same subjects. At the completion of 7th grade, should have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher to be eligible to apply. It is highly unlikely that 1st quarter 8th grade marks will elevate a GPA lower than 3.5 at the end of 7th grade to a qualifying GPA.Click here to learn about GPA calculation.

Fall Full-Time AAP Screening

Parents and teachers interested in referring students for the fall full-time AAP screening must submit a full-time AAP referral form to the school’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) by October 16. 2026.  Fall 2026 screening is only available to students newly enrolled in FCPS after January 1, 2026, who were not screened in Spring 2026.

PTA Corner

After School Program

Frost Middle School offers free after-school activities every Monday through Friday from 2:30 – 4:30 PM all school year long.

Whether your student wants to join sports, get help with homework, create, and compete in STEM clubs, play video games, or attend special events—there is something for everyone!  The full After School Program will begin on September 28^th.  Cross Country practice begins September 14^th.

Key Highlights:

• Free Programs: Running Monday–Friday until 4:30 PM.
• Bus Transportation: Available 4 days a week (Monday – Thursday) and parent pick up on Fridays.  Buses leave Frost between 4:45 - 5:00pm to take students home.
• Full Schedule & Details: Specific After School Program information for the 26-27 school year will be updated on our School Website https://frostms.fcps.edu/activities during the first couple weeks of school. 

26-27 Cross Country, Volleyball & Track competitive teams

This year Frost will have Cross Country in the Fall, Volleyball in the Winter & Track in the spring.  All students that want to Join Cross Country & Track will be on the team and will run in the Saturday competitions.  We will have tryouts for Volleyball in December for one girls’ team and one boys’ team.  Each team will have 12 players.  At this time, we do not have the competition schedule.

• Students participating in our Sports program must get a physical
• Parents & Doctor must complete the Physical form.  Once completed your student can turn it into the main office
• Parents must complete a Google Form to complete registration – The link has not been release yet – this will be sent out later in August an it will be posted in Schoology.
• Students must be registered to participate in the Frost After-School Program (link below)
• Cross Country practice begins September 14^th on Monday, Wednesday & Friday (buses available on Monday & Wednesday) parent pick up on Friday

Frost Middle School is partnering with Food For Neighbors to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity outside of school hours. Even in a county as wealthy as Fairfax, one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger.

Food For Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via the Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to the students every week through our food pantry. We hope you will consider participating in the Red Bag food collection program. You can make a difference in a local student’s life by simply adding a few extra items to your shopping cart every two months.

Here’s how it works:

1. Request a reusable Red Bag here and Food For Neighbors will drop it off at your house.
2. Fill the Red Bag with food items that are listed on a tag on that bag.
3. Put the Red Bag outside your front door in the morning on the next bag collection day. Collection dates are also listed on the bag tag. And don’t worry, FFN will send reminders.

Your Red Bag will be picked up from your house, the food sorted at a local school and delivered directly to the school food pantry at Frost MS. As an added benefit, you can get a tax deduction for the food that you donate!

Check out what items FFN collects as they are targeted to ready-made, individually packaged food items that students and teens can eat on-the-go or with little preparation.

As we partner with FFN, other critical volunteer opportunities include: Driving to pick up filled Red Bags and Sorting the donated food during the Red Bag Day events. Visit the FFN FAQ page to find out more and to sign up to volunteer in these two very important roles. These are great opportunities for our students to receive volunteer service hours, too.

Child Care and Early Learning Programs

The Virginia Department of Education has created a statewide online tool that helps Virginia families search for and compare child care and early learning programs, including information on program options, quality, and availability.

Virginia Energy Assistance Program (DSS)

Eligible households may receive help with heating, cooling, or energy emergencies through Fuel, Crisis, and Cooling Assistance programs. Support can include help paying utility bills, heating fuel, deposits, or repairing/replacing heating or cooling equipment. Applications are accepted online via CommonHelp, by phone, or through local DSS offices during program-specific application periods. Benefits are based on availability of funds.

Being connected to your school community helps you stay informed and support your child’s success. Take some time to get familiar with the many resources and tools available to FCPS families, including:

• School Age Child Care (SACC) — This Fairfax County Government program provides a safe and fun environment before and after school for elementary school-age children.
• FCPS Communications for Families — FCPS shares news and information to support student learning and promote family involvement.
• Family Liaisons — Family liaisons serve as a link between families and schools. Find out how family liaisons can support you and your family.

Resources for Families of Students with Disabilities

SEPTA, the Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association, was created to empower and connect families, students, and educators to ensure students with disabilities develop their full potential as individuals and community members. Learn more or become a member on the SEPTA website. 

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board’s Developmental Disability (DD) Waiver Program provides a range of services that individuals need throughout their lives. Visit the website to learn more and speak to an intake cooridinator.

The Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) is a state mandated Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). Parents/guardians, students, teachers, administrators, staff, and others interested in special education at FCPS are welcome and encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas, and/or public comment related to the unmet needs of students with disabilities.

FCPS’ Office of Special Education Procedural Support provides guidance to staff, families, and students in areas related to the implementation of and compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended.

The PRC offers free webinars, consultations, a lending library, and resources to help adults support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. Their YouTube channel includes videos of workshops and webinars for families and educators to support student success. The assistant ombuds for special education, provides information and support to parents/caregivers and students regarding special education and Section 504 services. Staff in the Office of the Ombuds believe that by being transparent and connecting families with available supports and services, children with special needs can equitably access public education.
