Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
We are excited for our second week of school! Students were reminded to work extra hard each day as there is no school on Friday or Monday next week! First grade students jumped right into writing late last week and used their skills to compose about their summer or favorite things to do; if you have a student in 1st grade, ask them what they wrote about! All grades started with a math unit involving data; 5th grade students have moved from gathering data to organizing and analyzing it in a variety of ways. Have a 5th grader? Give a pop quiz so they can tell you about stem and leaf or mean, median and mode. Sixth grade families see what your Roadrunner remembers about this!
As we consider how we are Stronger Together, we will recognize and celebrate the good things that happen at school that help build up our school community. Please complete this google form to recognize the way you saw a student, staff member or family strengthen our “MRES family-chain.” These recognitions along with those determined by staff will be added to a chain that starts in our lobby and will loop around our school all year long.
Student ID cards will be attached to your child’s backpack prior to boarding this Thursday. To avoid them getting lost; please keep their badges secured to their backpacks instead of wearing them. Students should begin tapping as they board and exit the bus. Only students who use FCPS transportation services will be provided with a student ID card at this time. We ask for your patience! Bus drivers are checking in students and may need some extra time at each bus stop while they do this.

School Events and Information
Summer Reading Challenge
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Summer Reading Challenge over the last few months! Remember, forms are due by this Thursday, September 3rd. Students can hand in completed forms using this link, or they can hand paper copies into their classroom teacher this week. Please be sure that students’ first AND last names are included on forms. Feel free to reach out to Librarian, Lisa Hoffman, anytime with questions (lahoffman@fcps.edu).
Madison High School County Fair and Football Game
You are invited to the County Fair and the first home football game of the season on Thursday, September 3rd at Madison High School! The Warhawks host the Lake Braddock Bruins, which kicks off at 7:00 pm. The event is a pyramid and community celebration with a variety of activities and games for all ages (cotton candy, face painting, obstacle course, meet the mascot, and much more). The event culminates with the annual “Warhawk Rush” as our Marshall Road students and other pyramid students race across the football field, being cheered on by the Vienna Community. Gates open at 5:00 pm and the “Warhawk Rush” begins at 6:50 pm. Ticket prices will be $7 adults, $5 students. This gives attendees unlimited access to all games/activities as well as admission into the game.

Families are invited to attend two AAP information meetings, led by Christine Marucchi, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):

AAP Continuum of Services: September 10th, 8:00 am in the library during the PTA Meeting. Families will learn about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS students.

Full-Time AAP Identification: October 8th, 6:00-7:00 pm in the library. Families of students in 2nd-6th grade will learn about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.

Required Forms Available in the Parent Digital Consent System
The start of the school year comes with several important forms that need to be completed for every student. We encourage families to log in to SIS ParentVUE and the Parent Digital Consent (PDC) System (same username and password that you use for SIS ParentVue) to complete forms. Opt-Out Information is also available in ParentVUE and should be completed by September 18.
Early Release Wednesdays
This year there will be four three-hour early release days for elementary schools. The dates for MRES are: September 30, November 18, January 13, and April 7. Please let us know whether your child will need childcare on these days by completing this form online or by confirming through the Online Verification/Update (OVU) packet in SIS ParentVUE.

Registration for PTA sponsored fall enrichment classes will be open on Tuesday, September 8th at 7:00 pm and will close on Wednesday, September 16th at 9:00 pm. Updated Cellphone and Smart Device Policy
Senate Bill 108 is a new Virginia law that went into effect on July 1. It requires that all schools in the state follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy and prohibit cellphone possession and use for the entire school day. The updated FCPS Cellphone Policy aligns with this law.
Across all grade levels, cellphones, cellphone accessories, and all smart devices must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (like a smartwatch) must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day, too. Personal devices that connect to a cellphone or cellphone accessory or operate as a smart device must also follow the FCPS Cellphone Policy.
This policy does not apply to school-issued devices. However, school-issued devices must be used in accordance with FCPS Regulation 6410, Acceptable Use Policy, which allows the use of school-issued devices for educational purposes. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.
