What a great second week at Langston Hughes Middle School! Our Panthers are ROCKING IT—arriving to class on time, getting settled, and engaging in learning. We are proud of the positive momentum we are seeing across our school!
Parents, your support and reinforcement at home make a tremendous difference. Remind your Panther that success does not happen by accident; it comes from hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. That is our mantra here at LHMS!
Diagnostic Assessments are next week.
Our math and reading diagnostic assessments will help us better understand what our students know and are ready to learn. Please help your Panther prepare by ensuring they do the following:
- Get a good night's rest each evening.
- Arrive at school on time and ready to learn.
- Bring their school-issued laptop fully charged each day.
Our First PBIS Panther Party is Friday, November 6, 2026.

Our First Honor-Roll Celebration is Friday, November 13, 2026.
We want YOUR Panther there! Encourage your child to continue working hard, staying focused, and giving their very best. We are excited to celebrate our scholars and their accomplishments!
Keep your Panther encouraged and motivated! Celebration fuels motivation! Let’s continue to celebrate their hard work, encourage their growth, and remind them that their effort and dedication make a difference. 😊
A Transportation Recommendation for Parents: If your child is a bus rider, Administration strongly recommends that they ride their assigned school bus home each day rather than walk home or ride the Connector bus. This helps us maintain a safe, orderly, and efficient dismissal process as we continue establishing routines.
Please also note that after-school activities and late buses will not begin until Monday, September 14, 2026. Until then, students should follow their regular dismissal plans.
A Reminder About Food Deliveries: Please be mindful that DoorDash and Uber Eats deliveries are not permitted for students at school. Students should not order food or have food delivered to the school during the school day. We appreciate your help in reinforcing this expectation with your Panther.

STUDENT SERVICES
Locker Requests
If your child needs a locker, please complete this Locker Request Form. Please be mindful that students are encouraged to carry all necessary materials in their backpacks. Going to a locker should not prevent students from arriving to class on time. Locker requests take one week to process. The locker number and combination will be available in Student Vue and Parent Vue, under the Student Info tab. Please contact your student’s counselor or Marissa Brooks with questions or concerns.
Back-to-School Night
We are excited to welcome parents/guardians to BTSN on Thursday, September 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m., as attendees will follow their student’s schedule. You will have an opportunity to meet teachers and learn about course curriculum and classroom expectations. If you are in need of interpreting, please complete this LHMS Interpreter Request form. The following “Early Bird” sessions are also being offered:
- 5:00-5:25- Standardized Testing in Middle School (Lecture Hall)
- 5:30-5:55- Mental Wellness Overview, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener, Signs of Suicide (SOS) Lesson Preview(Lecture Hall)
- 5:00-5:45- Sign up for ParentVue and complete Digital Consent (Cafeteria)
- 5:15-5:45- Family Life Education (FLE) Preview (room 155)
I-Ready and MAP Screeners
All students taking the Spring SOLs will participate in the iReady Reading and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Math screeners on the following dates:
We will follow our school-wide testing bell schedule on these days, with all students testing at 7:30 a.m. While these screeners do not count as a grade, the data helps teachers identify student strengths and determine additional supports that may be needed. Thank you for partnering with us to encourage students to always do their best. Contact your child’s LHMS school counselor if you have any questions.
Twice-Exceptional (2e) Programming
We’re excited to share information about Twice-Exceptional (2e) Programming available within FCPS. Twice-exceptional students demonstrate advanced abilities while also experiencing learning, attention, or other challenges that may require additional support. You can also visit the FCPS 2e webpage for additional information and resources.

Langston Hughes offers free after-school activities every Monday through Friday until 5:00 PM all school year long.
Whether your student wants to join sports, get help with homework, create and compete in STEM clubs, play video games, or attend special events—there is something for everyone!
Key Highlights:
• Free Programs: Running Monday–Friday until 5:00 PM.
• Bus Transportation: Available 4 days a week. Monday - Thursday.

AVID
Attention families!
Looking for a flexible and part-time position? FCPS is hiring AVID tutors for the 2026-2027 school year. AVID tutors work with small groups of approximately 5-7 students during the school day in an academic elective class called Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). These groups use questioning strategies to help students develop a variety of college preparatory skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. Tutors earn $21.77 per hour and should either be a college graduate or currently enrolled in college. If interested, please email your resume to AVID@fcps.edu.

You can buy one for $3 or 2 for $5. You write a note to your student, then we attach a pencil and Smartie and deliver it to them in class. Funds raised benefit the LHMS AVID program.
