Upcoming Dates and Events
Friday, September 4, and Monday, September 7, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends.
Tuesday, September 8 is Back to School Night for Edison Academy from 5:20p.m to 5:50p.m but teachers are available until 7:45p.m. Parking is limited so arriving early is recommended.
Friday, September 11, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown. That day is an evening-only observance day. Important events will not be held after school.
Monday September 21, is Yom Kippur holiday. Schools and offices will be closed.

September 11 National Day of Service
With the upcoming 25th anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.
All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Middle and high school students can learn more about service learning by logging into their Naviance account to access x2VOL.
September is Attendance Awareness Month
Attendance is important to success at all schools but incredibly important here at Edison Academy. Much of the time spent here is in a specialized lab space and that cannot be duplicated elsewhere. Also, our dual enrollment courses require seat hours in class in order to qualify for the college credit. Lastly, we really enjoy having our students at the Academy, so make sure to attend regularly.
Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.
If you or your family need any kind of support, please reach out to the front office of your school. We are here for you! Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.
Edison Academy Resources
Lanyards and Student Identifications
This month, all students who attend Edison Academy, that are not Edison High School students, will receive an Edison Academy lanyard and sticker for their new FCPS ID cards. It is expected that all feeder Academy students wear their lanyards with the ID when entering the building to speed along the entry process. This is being shared with all students at our orientation this week. The presentation will also be posted in Schoology.
Transportation and Parking
FCPS provides limited bus transportation between our students' base high schools for all students who attend Edison Academy from schools other than Edison High School. We also offer limited vehicle parking for those who need to drive to and from their Academy classes. Only students without shuttle transportation from base school, students with alternate class schedules, and students in Level 2 or Level 3 classes will be considered. Students arriving at the Edison Academy will enter (and exit) at Entrance #13 located on the far right, front of Edison High School (near Van Dorn St.).
Click here for more information on transportation.
Attendance
To report unexpected absences, parent/guardian must report using one of the following methods in addition to informing the base school attendance office:
Class Fees
Class fee invoices should have been sent and and are uploaded into MySchoolBucks (MSB). Payments for class fees should be made in MSB, if this is not possible, please send your student with a check or money order.
Free/Reduced lunch status - Please use this link to apply for free/reduced lunch status and don’t forget to complete the Consent to Share Information for Benefits for Other Programs portion and select All or Specific box for access to be granted to our finance technician to properly update the fees list. You must have this form and grant consent to share.
We Are a Personal Device-Free School
Please remind your child that students can no longer use their cell phones and other personal devices in and around school during school hours. Cell phones and personal devices must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell). This includes any form of wireless headset, smartwatches, smart glasses, laptops, tablets, and other items connected to the internet.
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan.
If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our academy office at 703-924-8100. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone policy, which helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school.
New Student ID Cards and Bus Navigation System
FCPS is launching a new bus navigation system, which includes student ID cards for students who ride the bus. Students will use the cards to tap on and off the bus, helping FCPS and families know exactly which students are riding which buses.
Learn more about the new system and how it will improve route efficiency, safety, and transparency with families. Check out the frequently asked questions for families.
