Back to School Night

Back to School Night is a special night for families to learn more about the FCPS Curriculum, your teachers, and your child’s experience at GBW. Families are strongly encouraged to attend this event, and we look forward to hosting families at this event.
- 6:00- 6:20 pm Principal Opening in Gym (School Doors 1 & 8 will open at 5:45 p.m.)
- 6:20 – 6:35 pm PTA welcome
- 6:45 – 7:10 Parent Session 1 in classrooms
- 7:15 – 7:40 Parent Session 2 in classrooms (repeat presentation for families with multiple children)
- 7:45 – 8:15 Parent Presentation about Special Education Services at GBW (Gym)
***Please note this event is mostly geared towards a parent / guardian presentation and we will not be providing childcare.
***Parking Reminders: We are anticipating a full parking lot so please plan to build in extra time to find legal parking / walking. Parking Restrictions for GBW neighborhood found here.

My name is Assia Samizay, and I am pleased to introduce myself as your Family Liaison at GBW.
In this role, I serve as a bridge between families, students, and the school. I am here to help connect you with school resources, get answers to your questions, support communication, and assist with any concerns or needs that may affect your child’s success and well-being.
I will also periodically be sending announcements and information to all families. Some topics may not apply to everyone, so please feel free to disregard anything that is not relevant or of interest to you.
Please feel free to reach out to me whenever you need assistance or are unsure where to begin. I look forward to getting to know you and working together to support your family.

Join Chorus at GBW!
Hi GBW Families!
Does your 5th or 6th grade student love to sing? We would love to have them join Chorus!
In chorus, students will learn how to sing as an ensemble, develop their singing skills, and have fun learning how to sing in harmony with others. Chorus meets weekly during PAW time and will start the week of September 7th!

We invite you to attend a parent information session on Friday, September 25th, from 8:15-9:00 PM in the Cafeteria. This meeting will cover the continuum of advanced academic services available in FCPS, as well as details about the full-time screening process.
Advanced Academic Programs Information
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January 2026 may be referred by October 15, 2026.

Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting [NAME], School Testing Coordinator, at [EMAIL ADDRESS] by September 30.
Families are invited to attend an AAP information meetings, led by Michelle Wilbern, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):

AAP Continuum of Services and Full-Time AAP Identification: Friday, September 25th from 8:15-9:00am in the Cafeteria. Families will learn about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS and about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.
