A Message from Principal Crews

Dear Hornet Families,

We had an AMAZING first week of school at Hollin Meadows. Our students are learning routines, procedures and building community in their classrooms. Last week our students learned that Hollin Hornets are:

Respectful

Responsible

Safe

Each month, teachers will recognize a Hornet of the Month who demonstrates our character traits and shows they are respectful, responsible, and safe. Families of recognized students will be invited to watch the celebration on the morning news. Ask your child how they demonstrated positivity this week!

For everyone’s safety, please use Kiss and Ride when driving students to school. Do not block Nordok Place, make unsafe turns, or park in the bus lane. Students who walk may enter through the back entrance near the field. Please watch for buses when dropping off in the front.

Thank you for helping keep our Hornets safe. Have a wonderful week—we look forward to Week 2!

Sincerely,

Jasibi Crews

Proud Principal

Advanced Academic Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.

Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

  • Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
  • Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.

FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.

  • All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
  • Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
  • Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Mrs.Gilley, School Testing Coordinator, at flgilley@fcps.edu by September 30.

Families are invited to attend two AAP information meetings, led by Mrs. Johnson, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):

  • AAP Continuum of Services: Sept. 15, 2026 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Room 153. Families will learn about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS students.
  • Full-Time AAP Identification: Oct. 7, 2026 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in Room 153. Families will learn about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.

For more information about the Advanced Academics Program, please contact Mrs. Teresa Johnson, AART, at ttjohnson1@fcps.edu or visit the FCPS Advanced Academic Programs website.

Student ID Cards for Hollin Meadows Bus Riders

We will begin distributing student ID cards to all our students who ride the school bus or use FCPS transportation services on Wednesday September 2nd. The teachers will distribute them to the BUS riders at the end of the day. The students will return their bus cards every morning when they arrive at the classroom.

Bus ID cards should be worn or attached to your child’s backpack and brought to the bus each day. We will hold the bus cards during the school day, and then return them to students for their bus trip home. Ask your child to put their bus ID card away in a safe place when they get home so they can find it in the morning before arriving at the bus stop.

Birthdays at HMES

We love celebrating birthdays! Families are welcome to drop off one packaged store-bought item that is allergy-friendly. Please communicate with your child's teacher as early as possible if you would like to drop off a item to share. Items should be dropped off in the front office of the school.

Celebrations take place at the end of the day. While we love our families, birthday celebrations are for students only.
