Dear Shrevewood Families,
It has been so great to have everyone back in the building and feeling the energy! We have had a wonderful first week of school, and the halls were filled with excitement, bright smiles, and a great enthusiasm for learning. Our Pre-K students had their first day of school today too!
Our students participated in grade-level assemblies this week where they learned all about the "Wise Owl Way." We encourage you to ask your child what this means and how they can demonstrate it in different parts of our school building!
We are also so proud of how well our students did during our first fire drill of the school year today. They followed directions quickly, quietly, and safely, showing true Wise Owl behavior in action.
Thank you for your continued partnership in making the start of the school year such a success. We look forward to a fantastic year ahead!

We can't wait to welcome you to our Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 1, at 5:30 p.m.! This is a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with you and share the excitement of the new school year.
You'll get to meet your child's teachers and learn all about what a typical day looks like, from classroom routines to the exciting curriculum they'll be exploring. Our specialists will also be available to share how their unique subjects support your child's development.
The evening is structured with two sessions to accommodate all of our families:
- Session 1: 5:35 - 6:15 p.m. (Presentations in classrooms & with specialists in the cafeteria)
- Session 2: 6:20 - 7:00 p.m. (A repeat of Session 1 for families with more than one child & with specialists in the cafeteria)
Just a friendly reminder: This is an adult-only event, so please plan for childcare in advance. We want to ensure you have a chance to fully engage in the presentations.
Families are encouraged to review the updated FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document, which explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses in order to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
Updates for the 2026-27 school year include new Universal Grade Matrices (UGMs). UGMs are charts that show behavior expectations and school responses by grade level (K-3, 4-8, and 9-12). These at-a-glance resources (in Appendix D of the SR&R) are designed to make it easier for parents and caregivers to understand how schools respond to different types of behavior concerns.

Parents/caregivers who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese may call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS. View the list of phone numbers.
FCPS will continue with limited early release Wednesdays for elementary schools during the 2026-27 school year. The number of days has been reduced from eight to four. These are in addition to the end of quarter early release days for all FCPS.
Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with their peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.

Senate Bill 108 is a new Virginia law that went into effect on July 1. It requires that all schools in the state follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy and prohibit cellphone possession and use for the entire school day. The updated FCPS Cellphone Policy aligns with this law, which means high school students are no longer able to use cellphones, cellphone accessories, or smart devices (like smart glasses, earbuds, headsets, and other items connected to the phone) during lunchtime.
Across all grade levels, cellphones, cellphone accessories, and all smart devices must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (like a smartwatch) must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day, too. Personal devices that connect to a cellphone or cellphone accessory or operate as a smart device must also follow the FCPS Cellphone Policy.
This policy does not apply to school-issued devices. However, school-issued devices must be used in accordance with FCPS Regulation 6410, Acceptable Use Policy, which allows the use of school-issued devices for educational purposes. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.
On Tuesday, July 28, a new ParentVUE mobile app became available in the Apple and Google app stores. This new app provides parents and caregivers with a more secure sign-in. The current “classic” app will remain active for about six months. Families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their child’s school data.
In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. Although enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this security feature.

Check out some tips to help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:
- Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
- Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.

Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens.
Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Studies show that students who eat both school breakfast and lunch tend to have healthier diets than those who don't participate in school meals.
Families who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals can receive breakfast and lunch for their students at no cost or at a reduced cost. This includes more than one-third of FCPS students. Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM) application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits.
The application for FRM is now available for the 2026-27 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

 Girls on the Run Registration Now Open!
Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia is returning to Shrevewood Elementary this fall for girls in grades 3–6. This youth development program combines physical activity with lessons on positive thinking, healthy relationships, self-confidence, positive body image, and standing up to peer pressure. The season concludes with a celebratory 5K event that is open to family and friends.
