I hope everyone’s school year is off to a great start! While I’ll be sharing a more comprehensive newsletter this Friday, I want to be sure parents and caregivers are aware of the updated Exception to Ride the School Bus process as we start off this year. Per regulation 8617.12, a new electronic system has replaced the previous paper-based process, providing an expedited review and response.
The Exception to Ride process is a useful tool for all families to know about, but we have a few circumstances this year where it may be particularly helpful. We have heard from several Springfield District residents who have high schoolers who no longer have a Fairfax County crossing guard to help with their walk to school, and we have some students who have been boundaried to a new school but may have taken advantage of the phasing option to finish out where they started. This Exception to Ride allows students in those circumstances and lots of others to ride a nearby bus if there is room! Be sure to read the information below!

🚌 New Exception to Ride the School Bus Procedure Starting This Year
Starting this school year, a new electronic system is in place to submit a request for an Exception to Ride the School Bus, replacing the previous paper-based process. Families will now complete and submit the Exception to Ride request online via form TR-52. Start by choosing your type of request from the drop-down menu. “Other” will work best for what was outlined above. This drop-down menu appears after selecting "Yes" in the "Are you the parent or legal guardian of the FCPS student for whom you are making this request?" drop-down.
 Once submitted, the request is automatically entered into a new tracking system, allowing the Office of Transportation Services to monitor each step of the review process from submission through final approval or denial. Traditionally, the department aims to have all decisions made by October, but with this new system and the circumstances this year, we may have decisions more quickly.
After a decision has been made, parents will automatically receive an email notification with the outcome. If the request is approved, the email will also include the student's bus assignment and transportation information.
