A Message from Principal Harris

Good afternoon, Frost Middle School Families,

The first week of school has gone exceptionally well! Our students are quickly getting acclimated to the building, connecting with their peers, and building wonderful relationships with our teachers and staff. Across all classrooms, teachers have focused this week on establishing a positive environment and setting clear expectations.

During morning announcements, I have regularly reminded students about our schoolwide guidelines regarding attendance, cell phone usage, lunchroom routines, and afternoon dismissal. The students are doing a fantastic job, demonstrating great responsibility, and asking insightful questions. If you have a moment, ask your child what they learned about our schoolwide expectations this week!

Looking ahead to next week, we have a busy and exciting schedule:

• Monday, August 31: Outdoor recess begins! Barring bad weather, students will get 15 minutes daily to stretch their legs and get the wiggles out.
• Monday & Tuesday, August 31 – September 1: Laptop distribution for all students.
• Tuesday, September 1: Back to School Night at Frost.
• Friday, September 4: Start of the four-day Labor Day weekend!

It has been a whirlwind of a start, but we are thrilled to lay such a strong foundation for the year ahead. Thank you for staying connected with us as we work together to support your children. As we close out this fantastic opening week, we are reminded of the wise words of the late, great Dolly Parton: "If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain." We appreciate you partnering with us through all the first-week adjustments to make this school year shine!

Parking

As always, parking at Frost Middle School is limited.  We are happy to announce that The City Gates Church has very kindly agreed to let our families use their parking lot. You can enter the church parking lot from Pickett Road.  It will be on your left, before you get to the entrance to Starlit Ponds.  It is a short six-minute walk from the parking lot to the school entrance.

As a reminder – please do not park in the fire lanes or the crosswalks – Fairfax County Police make routine patrols and may issue tickets.

TJHSST Admissions Presentation on 9/16

Current 8th Grade Parents/Guardians and Students: TJHSST Freshman Application Information Session

Attention parents/guardians and students, current 8^th grade students who have an aptitude and passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) are encouraged to apply for admission to the Class of 2031 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) beginning on Monday, October 5th at 4:00pm (Freshman Round Calendar). The application portal, course prerequisites, GPA requirements, and deadlines can be found here: TJHSST Application Information.  Some important points about the application process are included below, but it is essential that you review the TJHSST Freshman Application Process if you wish to apply.  TJHSST will host an information session in the Lecture Hall at Frost MS on September 16th from 2:45pm to 3:45pm. This is open to current 8th grade students who are interested in applying, and students who attend the session will be able to ride the late bus home. Parents and guardians of current 8^th grade students are welcome to attend this event as well. Parents attending this event will need to enter the building through the Main Office (Door #1) to sign in and then head down the hall to the Lecture Hall where the meeting is being held.

If you have any questions about the TJHSST admissions process, make sure you review the TJ Admissions website thoroughly, and plan to attend the admissions information session at Frost MS on September 16th. We hope to see you there! If you are unable to attend the admissions information session being held at Frost MS, please refer to the TJ Admissions website for the complete list of dates and locations for TJ Admissions Fall Presentation Sessions which are open to the public and being held throughout the county.

TJHSST Eligibility Requirements:

• Students must be enrolled in the following courses in grade 8:
  • Algebra 1 Honors or higher-level math
  • Honors Science
  • One additional honors course in Social Studies or English, or student is identified as a Young Scholar
• Minimum GPA is 3.5. This GPA is for final unweighted marks in 7th grade for math, science, English, social studies, and World Language (if for high school credit) as well as 1st quarter 8th grade for the same subjects. At the completion of 7th grade, should have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher to be eligible to apply. It is highly unlikely that 1st quarter 8th grade marks will elevate a GPA lower than 3.5 at the end of 7th grade to a qualifying GPA.Click here to learn about GPA calculation.

Join us on September 17 from 7:15–8:30 a.m. for a Middle School Bootcamp for Parents. We will review the nuts and bolts of supporting your student’s academics, common challenges in a middle schooler’s journey, strategies to support them at home, and who to contact when you have questions or concerns. You’ll also receive an overview of helpful platforms—including ParentVUE, Schoology, TalkingPoints, and Lightspeed. We hope to see you there!

Student Schedule Questions or Concerns?

All student schedule questions or concerns should be emailed to counselors by Thursday, September 3. Student’s counselors are listed as Period 9 in their SIS class schedule. Counselor contact information can be found on our Student Services website.

FCPS Cellphone, Phone Accessories, and Smart Devices Policy

Policy for All Grade Levels: Cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices must be off and personally stored (i.e., backpacks) for the duration of the school day: bell to bell. Smart devices include watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other items connected to the internet. This policy does not apply to school-issued devices.

Fall Full-Time AAP Screening

Parents and teachers interested in referring students for the fall full-time AAP screening must submit a full-time AAP referral form to the school’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) by October 16. 2026.  Fall 2026 screening is only available to students newly enrolled in FCPS after January 1, 2026, who were not screened in Spring 2026.

New Student ID Cards Coming for Bus Riders This Fall 

As part of the ongoing commitment to strengthening layered safety and security programs, FCPS will implement a new student ID system for students who ride our school buses.

The implementation of the student IDs is designed as an additional safety measure for our 130,000 students who ride the bus each day, ensuring they are on the right bus and that they get on and off at the correct bus stop, as well as making sure only authorized students are on our buses.

The IDs will be provided to students who ride the bus. Those students will be expected to tap on and tap off the bus. The student IDs do not track student movement. The only information available is when a student taps on or off a bus. Much like our Here Comes the Bus app, our new app will allow parents/guardians to track the progress of the school bus.

It is possible that the ID program will expand in the future to include uses such as library cards and meal payment. Learn more about the new transportation system and student ID cards.

Locker Requests

Students will not automatically be provided a locker, due to limited availability.  If you would like to request a locker for your student, please fill out the form.  Students will only be able to use them in the morning before first period, around lunch, and at the end of the day.  Lockers will not be distributed until the third week of school. Families can continue to request lockers throughout the year at the start of each quarter.  

E-Bikes & E-Scooters

On School Grounds

For the safety of all students, staff, and visitors, students are not permitted to ride e-bikes, e-scooters, or similar motorized devices on school grounds. Upon entering school property, students must dismount and walk their e-bike, e-scooter, or other device until they have left school grounds.

Safety Alert: E-Bikes vs. E-Dirt Bikes

With more students riding to school on electric rides, the Fairfax County Police Department wants to make sure everyone stays safe and knows the rules! There's an important difference between a legal e-bike and an illegal e-dirt bike.

Legal E-Bikes (Class 1, 2, or 3)

• Pedals required: Must have functional pedals.

• Motor size: 750 watts or less.

• Where to ride: Legal on roads and trails.

• Requirements: Considered a standard bicycle under Virginia law, so no driver's license or registration is needed.

Illegal E-Dirt Bikes

• No pedals: Missing pedals entirely.

• High speeds: Capable of speeds over 35 MPH.

• Where to ride: Not street-legal and not allowed on public roads or trails.

• Requirements: Treated as a motor vehicle, which requires a driver's license and insurance.

• Potential Violations: Riding these incorrectly can lead to charges for off-road use (§ 46.2-915.1), registration violations (§ 46.2-613), or reckless driving.

Helmet Rules to Remember

• Class 3 E-Bikes: Helmets are required for all riders.

• Riders 14 & Under: Must wear a helmet on any e-bike.

• E-Dirt Bikes: Require a DOT-approved helmet.

E-Bike Safety & Rules: What You Need to Know!

With so many students riding e-bikes around town and to school, the Fairfax County Police Department put together a quick guide to help keep everyone safe and legal on the road.

How E-Bikes Are Classified

• Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph max speed.

• Class 2: Pedal-assist plus throttle control, up to 20 mph max speed.

• Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph max speed (must have a speedometer).

Important Rules of the Road

• Where to ride: E-bikes are treated just like regular bicycles under Virginia state law. You can ride them on streets, roads, shoulders, bike lanes, and shared-use paths (just not interstates!).

• Licenses & Registration: Riders don’t need a driver's license, title, registration, or license plates for standard e-bikes.

• Age Rules for Class 3: Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 14 years old unless supervised by an adult (18+).

Helmet Requirements

• Under 15: Everyone under the age of 15 must wear a helmet on any e-bike, regardless of class.

• Class 3 Riders: Fairfax County requires all Class 3 e-bike riders to wear a helmet.

Legal E-Bikes vs. Illegal E-Dirt Bikes

• What makes an e-bike legal? It must have functional pedals, a seat, an electric motor of 750 watts or less, and stay within the speed limits above.

• Watch out for e-dirt bikes! Any electric bike without pedals is considered a motorcycle. It is illegal to ride these on public roadways, bike lanes, or trails unless the rider has a valid driver's license, motorcycle registration, insurance, and plates.

Free and Reduced - Price Meals (FRM)

As of October 31, 2025 approximately 36 percent of students in FCPS qualify for free and reduced-price meals. The prices for paid breakfast and lunch are determined by the School Board and the price of reduced-price meals are established by the federal government.

Families who earn less than 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals and those with incomes between 130 and 185 percent of poverty level qualify for reduced-price meals.

After School Program

Frost Middle School offers free after-school activities every Monday through Friday from 2:30 – 4:30 PM all school year long.

Whether your student wants to join sports, get help with homework, create, and compete in STEM clubs, play video games, or attend special events—there is something for everyone!  The full After School Program will begin on September 28^th.  Cross Country practice begins September 14^th.

Key Highlights:

• Free Programs: Running Monday–Friday until 4:30 PM.
• Bus Transportation: Available 4 days a week (Monday – Thursday) and parent pick up on Fridays.  Buses leave Frost between 4:45 - 5:00pm to take students home.
• Full Schedule & Details: Specific After School Program information for the 26-27 school year will be updated on our School Website https://frostms.fcps.edu/activities during the first couple weeks of school. 

26-27 Cross Country, Volleyball & Track competitive teams

This year Frost will have Cross Country in the Fall, Volleyball in the Winter & Track in the spring.  All students that want to Join Cross Country & Track will be on the team and will run in the Saturday competitions.  We will have tryouts for Volleyball in December for one girls’ team and one boys’ team.  Each team will have 12 players.  At this time, we do not have the competition schedule.

• Students participating in our Sports program must get a physical
• Parents & Doctor must complete the Physical form.  Once completed your student can turn it into the main office
• Parents must complete a Google Form to complete registration – The link has not been release yet – this will be sent out later in August an it will be posted in Schoology.
• Students must be registered to participate in the Frost After-School Program (link below)
• Cross Country practice begins September 14^th on Monday, Wednesday & Friday (buses available on Monday & Wednesday) parent pick up on Friday

Child Care and Early Learning Programs

The Virginia Department of Education has created a statewide online tool that helps Virginia families search for and compare child care and early learning programs, including information on program options, quality, and availability.

Virginia Energy Assistance Program (DSS)

Eligible households may receive help with heating, cooling, or energy emergencies through Fuel, Crisis, and Cooling Assistance programs. Support can include help paying utility bills, heating fuel, deposits, or repairing/replacing heating or cooling equipment. Applications are accepted online via CommonHelp, by phone, or through local DSS offices during program-specific application periods. Benefits are based on availability of funds.

• School Age Child Care (SACC) — This Fairfax County Government program provides a safe and fun environment before and after school for elementary school-age children.

Resources for Families of Students with Disabilities

SEPTA, the Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association, was created to empower and connect families, students, and educators to ensure students with disabilities develop their full potential as individuals and community members. Learn more or become a member on the SEPTA website. 

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board’s Developmental Disability (DD) Waiver Program provides a range of services that individuals need throughout their lives. Visit the website to learn more and speak to an intake cooridinator.

The Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) is a state mandated Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). Parents/guardians, students, teachers, administrators, staff, and others interested in special education at FCPS are welcome and encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas, and/or public comment related to the unmet needs of students with disabilities.

FCPS’ Office of Special Education Procedural Support provides guidance to staff, families, and students in areas related to the implementation of and compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended.

The PRC offers free webinars, consultations, a lending library, and resources to help adults support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. Their YouTube channel includes videos of workshops and webinars for families and educators to support student success. The assistant ombuds for special education, provides information and support to parents/caregivers and students regarding special education and Section 504 services. Staff in the Office of the Ombuds believe that by being transparent and connecting families with available supports and services, children with special needs can equitably access public education.
