 The first week of school has been filled with new beginnings! Across Oakton, students are getting to know their teachers and classmates, learning classroom expectations, and settling into the rhythms of the school day. We are excited to see their curiosity, enthusiasm, and sense of school spirit growing each day.

Celebrating Birthdays at OES
Our students enjoy celebrating their birthdays with classmates! If you would like to send in a birthday treat, please coordinate with your child’s classroom teacher in advance. Because many of our students have food allergies, we encourage families to consider non-food treats.
If you choose to send a food treat, please follow these guidelines:
- Work with the classroom teacher to determine the best time for treats to be distributed. Please do not assume treats will be served during lunch.
- Bring all food treats to the school office.
- The classroom teacher will distribute the treats at the agreed-upon time.
- Parents may not come to school to distribute treats in the classroom or cafeteria without first coordinating with the teacher.
- Treats may only be given to students in the child’s homeroom class.
- Please work with the teacher to determine what will happen with any leftover treats.

Penny Wars
The PTA Penny Wars fundraiser is returning to help grades compete to raise the most points!
Event Details
Dates: September 14–18
Location: Collection bottles will be located in the school lobby
Goal: The grade level with the most positive points at the end of the week wins a prize!
How to Play
ADD Points to Your Grade: Drop pennies or dollar bills into your own grade's bottle.
SUBTRACT Points from Other Grades: Drop silver coins into other grades' bottles to reduce their totals.

Directory information to be shared with the PTA
Each year, Oakton Elementary may provide parent name, email address, student name, and teacher name to the PTA for families who have not opted out. Typically, the PTA uses such information to publish student directories (either electronic or paper) and to contact your family about school-related activities.
If you would like your student’s information to be excluded, the enrolling parent must use their ParentVue credentials to access the Parent Digital Consent portal and toggle the “Choice A – School-related Organizations opt-out” in the Directory Information section. This will not opt the student out of the yearbook.
While a family may change the opt out status at any time, Oakton will share the information for those not opted out on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. If you wish to opt out, please do so no later than Monday, September 7. Volunteer for Panther Art at Oakton Elementary!
Help keep art alive at OES by joining Panther Art, our volunteer-based in-class art program. It's a fantastic way to spend quality time in your child's classroom.
Volunteer Details:

What You’ll Do: Present information about artists/artwork, set up art projects, and spend about an hour in the classroom for each quarterly session.

No Experience Needed: All materials and information are provided, and training is conducted via Zoom.

Goal: We need about 90 volunteers (2–3 per classroom) to bring this program to life!

 The Greater Oakton Community Association invites you and your family to Oakton Day in the Park, Sunday, August 30, from 1-4 p.m., at Oakton Community Park, 2841 Hunter Mill Rd. This free community celebration brings neighbors together for an afternoon of live music, delicious food, games, children’s activities, and family-friendly entertainment. Visitors can tour the historic Oakton Schoolhouse, meet local nonprofits and community organizations, connect with area businesses, and enjoy everything Oakton Day has to offer.
Oakton Elementary Chess Club Information
Who Can Join: Students in grades 2–6, from beginners to advanced players. Players are grouped by ability rather than age.
Meeting Details: Tuesdays from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM in the cafeteria.
Fall Semester: September 29 – January 26
Spring Semester: February 2 – May 25
Cost: $150 per student per semester. This fee includes a weekly meeting, a club T-shirt (one per year), snacks, and the opportunity to participate in the Elementary Team League.
Benefits: Taught through a partnership with the non-profit U.S. Chess Center, the program teaches rules to beginners and strategy to experienced players. It builds critical thinking, problem-solving, responsibility, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Oakton Elementary School PTA invites families to join the Wait Until 8th initiative, a simple and free pledge encouraging parents to hold off on giving their children smartphones until at least the end of 8th grade.
What is the Pledge?
The Commitment: Promise to refrain from giving your child a smartphone until the end of 8th grade.
Allowed Alternatives: Basic call-and-text phones or GPS watches are completely fine; parents maintain full control over what works best for their family.
How It Works: Once enough families in a grade level sign on, the pledge becomes active, ensuring no single child feels like "the only one without a phone".
Benefits of Waiting Delaying smartphone usage helps protect children's overall development and well-being in several key areas:
- Healthy sleep patterns
- Focus and attention
- Stronger in-person friendships
- Creativity and imagination
- Emotional resilience
- Family connection
