Welcome Back to a Fantastic New School Year!
What an incredible start to the school year! Walking through the hallways this week, the energy has been amazing, and seeing so many happy, glowing faces back in our classrooms is a great reminder of why our school community is so special.
We’ve already hit the ground running with some wonderful highlights from our first week:

6th Grade House Sorting: Our sixth graders were sorted in our annual House Sorting ceremony! The excitement was palpable as students were welcomed into their houses with cheers, high-fives, and instant camaraderie.

Band & Strings Recruitment: Our music department kicked off instrument recruitment. Our 4th, 5th and 6th graders had the opportunity to participate in an assembly from our Woodson High School Cavaliers!

First Safety Drill: We successfully completed our very first fire drill of the school year. Our students and staff handled it like absolute pros—exiting quickly, quietly, and efficiently to keep our school safe.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our PTA: A huge shoutout to our incredible PTA for treating our faculty and staff to a wonderful lunch the Friday before school opened.
Thank you to our students, staff, and families for bringing such positivity and momentum into week one. Let’s keep this great energy going!

Students have the option of dismissing at 12:25 pm, or staying at school and dismissing at the usual time of 3:25 pm.

 Woodson band and strings students visited WFES and shared all of their instruments with our 4th, 5th and 6th grade students to help them think about what instrument they would like to play.

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year! We appreciate our families following kiss-and-ride procedures and being understanding while waiting for school buses.
Be on the lookout! Schools have started distributing student ID cards to students who ride the bus or use FCPS transportation services.
If a bus is delayed, parents and caregivers may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to communicate significant bus delays. Visit the Transportation Services webpage to find out who to contact with specific questions. For emergencies after hours, contact the Office of Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.
Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays. If you are not receiving emails and believe you should be, submit an IT support ticket that includes your student’s name, your email address, and a request to verify that you have access to messages from eNotify. This is the system that provides critical updates including bus stop information, weather closings, and other emergency messaging.
During the week of August 31st, WFES will begin distributing student ID cards to all our students who ride the school bus or use FCPS transportation services.
ID cards and lanyards will be passed out to students by their homeroom teacher if they are a bus rider.
ID cards should be worn to the bus each day. Upon arriving to school, students will then put their student ID card away in their backpacks until the end of the day.
Students who have student ID cards should begin tapping as they board and exit the bus. Only students who use FCPS transportation services will be provided with a student ID card at this time.
We ask for your patience! Bus drivers are checking in students and may need some extra time at each bus stop while they do this. The transportation team is working hard to minimize any potential delays.

We love having our volunteers, families and visitors come in to our school. Beginning this year, everyone coming in must have a valid ID to enter, which would be a driver's license, Passport, Military ID, etc. This includes grandparents, babysitters, friends and family members coming to have lunch, volunteer in the classroom or see a performance during school hours.
If you do not have an ID with you, you will not be permitted to go past the front office. Thank you for helping to keep our kids safe.
Families can now easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account and parents can easily opt in or opt out their child from a variety of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, tutoring services, and how student information is managed.

The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 6 in October. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent. Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school. Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.
Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology. Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Come celebrate the new school year and Woodson Pyramid Night on Thursday, September 3rd at the Woodson Football Stadium! At our annual Cav Carnival we will have games, face painting, prizes, and finish with running of the field. Students K-6 get in free with a paying adult. Carnival Games start at 4:30pm, running of the field at 6:45. Our football game will start at 7:00pm against the Edison Eagles.
FCPS invites new and returning military-connected families to celebrate the start of the 2026–27 school year at a Welcome BBQ. Families can enjoy food, activities, and an opportunity to meet and connect with other military-connected families from across FCPS.
