Parents, Caregivers, Friends and fellow Statesmen,
The 2026-27 school year is upon us. We look forward to seeing your students arrive on Monday morning for the first day of classes. Students will attend their 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th period red day classes. 1st period begins at 8:10.
I enjoyed meeting so many students and parents on Thursday evening for Statesmen Start. Hundreds of students and families came to pick up laptops and complete opening of school tasks. More than 80 clubs, sports, activities and organizations were represented to provide new and returning students a window into the many ways that students can be involved in our school community. Thank you to our amazing PTSA, boosters, staff and volunteers for making the event a success. This morning I was able to meet our incoming freshmen and parents. Students had a chance to meet key school personnel, seniors supporting our freshman transition program, and visit their teachers. My message to all Marshall students—freshmen included—is simple: work hard, find your niche, have no regrets, and be nice. Following these four tenets will set our students up for success.
Schedules
Students are now able to see their schedules in SIS StudentVue. A printed, finalized copy of students’ schedules will also be provided during first period class. Lunches are determined by 5th period on red days and 6th period on blue days. Lunch assignments may be found here.
The only approved schedule changes during the first week of school will be for missing classes, sequencing errors, or graduation requirement needs.
Arrival
Kiss and Ride is located behind the school off Marshall Drive. Drop off is located by door 4 and students enter the building at door 5 for security screening. Please, please, please do not enter the front parking area to drop your student! If you are driving your student to school, please allow extra time for the increased traffic that accompanies the first day of school. Please partner with us to have a safe and orderly arrival.
Bus routes are available in ParentVue and StudentVue.
Cell Phones and Personal Devices
Cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headphones, laptops, Meta glasses and Smart watches) are not permitted from 8:10 to 2:55. Please reinforce this expectation with your student. Leave unnecessary devices like earbuds and headphones at home. Our time and energy is best spent supporting students and teachers rather than confiscating cell phones and devices.
We are ready for your students and look forward to an amazingly successful school year,
Jay Pearson

New Student Device Requirement
Starting this school year, students may only use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day. This is in accordance with a new School Board requirement, approved on July 16, which states that students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices, including personal laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smartphones, and similar devices.
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device.
Families can help support this requirement by reminding students to bring their FCPS-issued device each day and use it for all school-related digital activities unless an approved exception applies.

Request PSAT and SAT School Day Testing Accommodations and Multilingual Support
FCPS high schools will give the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) to 10th and 11th graders on Wednesday, October 7. That same day, 12th graders will participate in SAT School Day.
Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or multilingual support. Families can view Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about College Board accommodations on the FCPS website.
If you have a student with disabilities in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this school year, please review the accommodations request process and return forms to the high school by Monday, August 3.
If you have a multilingual learner (ML) in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this school year, please review the ML support request process and return forms by Thursday, August 27, if you wish to request ML support for the October 2026 PSAT/NMSQT or SAT School Day.

Football Game Safety and Security Update
As we prepare for another exciting fall sports season, FCPS is implementing additional safety and security measures at all varsity football games.
Beginning this season, all spectators will participate in security screenings using the same weapons detection technology introduced in our middle and high schools last school year. A standardized bag policy will also be in place to help ensure a safe, efficient entry process for everyone attending our games.
These enhancements are designed to support a safe and welcoming environment while allowing families, students, and community members to enjoy Friday night football. We encourage attendees to arrive a little earlier than usual to allow time for screening. Get more information about weapons screening at football games.

SEL Screener Parent/Guardian Notification
The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
💻 Catch Up on Your Child’s Classwork in Schoology
Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected.
A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:
- Your child’s classes.
- Your child’s upcoming assignments.
- School, class, and group announcements.
To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE account. Get more information on how to login and use Schoology.
Be First-Day Ready
The first day of school, Monday, August 24, is just around the corner! Check out these back-to-school tips to make sure your child gets off to a great start.
Also find out what will be new this school year.
You Can Manage Student Web Access at Home
At Marshall, we acknowledge that parents are our students' first and most important teachers. Parents now have greater control over their child’s FCPS-issued device outside of school hours through Lightspeed Parent Portal.
In addition to monitoring weekly internet activity, parents can now also customize web access at home on FCPS devices through Lightspeed using Schedules and Web Rules.
With Schedules, you can set tailored times to automatically pause or restrict internet access. This makes it easier to enforce rules around homework time, family dinners, weekends, or bedtime.
In Web Rules, you can create Custom Block Lists to block specific, individual websites they do not want your child accessing at home. This allows parents greater control over what is happening online, under their own roof.
These new custom controls take effect at home, outside of school hours, and when the device is off the FCPS network. They will not override standard district filtering policies during the instructional day.
Customize Your Lightspeed Settings
All parents should be receiving weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report emails. To set up these new features, click the “Log in or Register” button at the bottom of your weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
Visit the FCPS Lightspeed Parent Portal Guide for more information. If you have additional questions, submit a Parent Technology Support Ticket.
Parents are encouraged to discuss internet boundaries with their children so that they can understand the reasoning behind any limits and the differences between access at home and at school. Get tips on talking to your children about technology safety.
