Monday, August 24, is the first day of school. The doors will open for all students at 9:10 AM. The school day officially begins at 9:20 AM, so please make sure your child is in their classroom, seated, and ready to learn by this time.
Arrival Procedures
- At 9:10 AM, Door 1 will open for walkers. Students eating breakfast should go directly to the cafeteria. All other walkers should proceed directly to their classrooms.
- For the security of all students and staff, parents are not permitted to escort children to their classrooms.

If your child has supplies they cannot carry independently, please label them with your child's name and teacher, and drop them off at the main office.

All walkers must enter through Door 1.

Kindergarteners will be met in the lobby and escorted to their classrooms by student safety patrols.

All students should be in their classrooms by 9:20 AM.
Dismissal Procedures
To ensure a smooth dismissal, please review the following with your child:

Walkers: Who they walk home with and where they will meet them.

Kiss & Riders: Their Kiss & Ride number.

Bus Riders: Their bus number and bus stop.
Walkers
-
Kindergarteners will be dismissed from Door 6 (by the playground). An adult escort is required for all kindergarten walkers.

First graders will be dismissed from Door 5.

Students in grades 2-6 can exit through any door that is convenient for their family. Please arrange a specific meeting spot with your child.
- The gates will not be opened until 4:00pm.
Kiss & Riders
-
Kiss & Ride numbers remain the same from year to year. New families will receive a hangtag to display on their rearview mirror. If you lose your tag, you may write the number on a piece of paper and place it on your dashboard.

Students in grades K-2 will dismiss from the gym. Staff and patrols will escort them outside when their car arrives.

Students in grades 3-6 will remain in their classrooms and watch for their Kiss & Ride numbers to appear on the Silent Dismissal slide displayed on the Smartboard. They will come to the car when they see their number.
Bus Riders

Students in grades K-1 will be escorted to their buses by staff. All kindergarten students must be met by an adult at the bus stop.

Students in grades 2-6 will watch for their bus numbers on the Silent Dismissal slide in their classrooms and leave at the appropriate time.
We have a dedicated team of staff and student safety patrols supporting arrival and dismissal. Please help us keep everyone safe by following these guidelines daily.
Lightspeed Updates
You Can Manage Student Web Access at Home
At Canterbury Woods ES, we acknowledge that parents are our students' first and most important teachers. Parents now have greater control over their child’s FCPS-issued device outside of school hours through Lightspeed Parent Portal.
In addition to monitoring weekly internet activity, parents can now also customize web access at home on FCPS devices through Lightspeed using Schedules and Web Rules.
With Schedules, you can set tailored times to automatically pause or restrict internet access. This makes it easier to enforce rules around homework time, family dinners, weekends, or bedtime.
In Web Rules, you can create Custom Block Lists to block specific, individual websites they do not want your child accessing at home. This allows parents greater control over what is happening online, under their own roof.
These new custom controls take effect at home, outside of school hours, and when the device is off the FCPS network. They will not override standard district filtering policies during the instructional day.
Customize Your Lightspeed Settings
All parents should be receiving weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report emails. To set up these new features, click the “Log in or Register” button at the bottom of your weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.

Parents are encouraged to discuss internet boundaries with their children so that they can understand the reasoning behind any limits and the differences between access at home and at school. Get tips on talking to your children about technology safety.

School Meals
Help Your Child Navigate the Lunch Line
Check out some tips to help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:
- Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
- Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.

Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens.
Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.

Get Ready for Day One with the FCPS App! 🎒
As we gear up for the first day of school, make sure you have the FCPS mobile app downloaded! It's the quickest way to check the school year calendar, view lunch and breakfast menus, find school contacts, and jump to ParentVUE or Schoology from your phone.

Student IDs/Bus Tracking
New Student ID Cards and Bus Navigation System
FCPS is launching a new bus navigation system, which includes student ID cards for students who ride the bus. Students will use the cards to tap on and off the bus, helping FCPS and families know exactly which students are riding which buses.

Understanding Student Rights and Responsibilities Updates: New Universal Grade Matrices for Families
Families are encouraged to review the updated FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document, which explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses in order to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
Updates for the 2026-27 school year include new Universal Grade Matrices (UGMs).
UGMs are charts that show behavior expectations and school responses by grade level (K-3, 4-8, and 9-12).
These at-a-glance resources (in Appendix D of the SR&R) are designed to make it easier for parents and caregivers to understand how schools respond to different types of behavior concerns.

SEL Screener Parent/Guardian Notification
The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
