Dear Lewis Families,
What a great way to kick off the school year! We had a successful Lancer Launch today, and it was wonderful to see so many of our students and families back at Lewis. Thank you to everyone who came out, connected with our staff, and helped us start the year with such positive energy. We loved welcoming our Lancers back into the building and are even more excited for Monday!

It is hard to believe that Monday, August 24 is the first day of school! We are excited and ready to welcome our students back to Lewis for a great school year. Our staff has been working hard to prepare, and we cannot wait to have our hallways filled with our Lancers again!
As we prepare for Monday, here are a few important reminders:
📱 Cell Phones & Personal Devices Cell phones, smartwatches, and wireless headphones are not permitted during the school day from 8:10 AM–2:55 PM. This expectation will be enforced beginning on the first day of school. Please begin having conversations with your student at home so that everyone is prepared for a strong start. We appreciate your partnership in helping us create a learning environment where students are present, engaged, and focused.
🏫 Back-to-School Night – Wednesday, September 2 at 6:00 PM We also look forward to welcoming our families back to Lewis for Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 2 at 6:00 PM. This will be a great opportunity to meet your student's teachers, walk through their schedule, and learn more about what they can expect this year.
If you have questions regarding Back-to-School Night, please contact Kim Harrison at ksharrison1@fcps.edu.
We are looking forward to an incredible year of learning, growth, connection, and opportunities for our students. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
We can't wait to see our Lancers on Monday!
Warmly, Serena Giron Principal John R. Lewis High School

Also find out what will be new this school year.
Starting this school year, students may only use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day. This is in accordance with a new School Board requirement, approved on July 16, which states that students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices, including personal laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smartphones, and similar devices. Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device.
Families can help support this requirement by reminding students to bring their FCPS-issued device each day and use it for all school-related digital activities unless an approved exception applies.

As we prepare for another exciting fall sports season, FCPS is implementing additional safety and security measures at all varsity football games.
Beginning this season, all spectators will participate in security screenings using the same weapons detection technology introduced in our middle and high schools last school year. A standardized bag policy will also be in place to help ensure a safe, efficient entry process for everyone attending our games.
These enhancements are designed to support a safe and welcoming environment while allowing families, students, and community members to enjoy Friday night football. We encourage attendees to arrive a little earlier than usual to allow time for screening. Get more information about weapons screening at football games.
