LCES Updates 8/21/26 This Week's Updates

Welcome Back, Students and Families!

Dear Lees Corner Families,

It was a joy to see so many of our wonderful families at Open House today! Our modular classrooms and hallways were filled with excitement, smiles, and positive energy as we reconnected. A special thank-you to our PTA, Scouts, and other community partners who joined us to welcome and greet our families.

We are excited to officially welcome everyone back to school on Monday, August 24! Please review the arrival and dismissal procedures below. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these routines during our renovations.

On the first day of school, parents and guardians may walk their students to the classroom door inside the building. Families of students in Grades 4–6 may walk their students to the ramp.

Thank you for helping us begin the school year with a smooth and successful start as we establish our routines and procedures.

See you Monday!

Ms. Sloan & Ms. Hutchinson

Kiss and Ride: Helpful Tips

Kiss and Ride

Many families will use Kiss and Ride for both arrival and dismissal and the line can get long. Please be patient and kind with one another and our staff on duty! It will take time for us to establish these routines and procedures with our students. Here are a few more helpful tips:

  • Morning drop-off starts at 8:35 a.m.
  • Plan on being in line early
  • Drivers should remain in the car
  • School staff will be on duty to assist students in unloading and loading
  • Children should unload from the car on the passenger side only
  • Cars should remain in a single file line. Passing other cars is NOT allowed in order to ensure the safety of all students.
  • Afternoon pick-up starts at 3:35 p.m.
  • For afternoon pick-up, please display your assigned number in the right corner of your front windshield. Make sure your child knows what your number is (ie. 352). We will use the numbers to call the students out to your car.
  • No student should be dropped off or cross Hollinger Avenue to get to or from a vehicle.  Nor should cars make a U-turn in front of the school during arrival and dismissal.

Kiss and Ride ends at 3:50 p.m. Any students who have not been picked up by that time will be taken to the office. Parents will be contacted and must come to the office to sign their child out.

Lees Corner Earns the Eco-Schools U.S. Green Flag!

Green Flag

Lees Corner Elementary School and our Eco Team have officially earned the Green Flag distinction through the Eco-Schools U.S. program run by the National Wildlife Federation—a nationally recognized honor for excellence in environmental action and sustainability leadership.

This student-led program provides opportunities for youth leadership, raising environmental awareness, connecting students to the natural world, and driving positive environmental change. Building these lifelong skills like collaboration, critical thinking, and resiliency are part of the division’s Portrait of a Graduate program.

This past year, the school demonstrated strong whole-school engagement through initiatives like EcoCode feedback, the Green Bins program, food share program, and recycling efforts. We also shared projects such as the creation of the Northern Virginia Invasive Species Guide Coloring Book and climate change artwork. Congratulations on earning the Eco-Schools U.S. Green Flag! We are proud of the work happening at Lees Corner Elementary School. Green Flag certification is a great achievement and we look forward to continuing our work this school year!

Lightspeed Updates

You Can Manage Student Web Access at Home

At Lees Corner Elementary School, we acknowledge that parents are our students' first and most important teachers. Parents now have greater control over their child’s FCPS-issued device outside of school hours through Lightspeed Parent Portal.

In addition to monitoring weekly internet activity, parents can now also customize web access at home on FCPS devices through Lightspeed using Schedules and Web Rules.

With Schedules, you can set tailored times to automatically pause or restrict internet access. This makes it easier to enforce rules around homework time, family dinners, weekends, or bedtime.

In Web Rules, you can create Custom Block Lists to block specific, individual websites they do not want your child accessing at home. This allows parents greater control over what is happening online, under their own roof.

These new custom controls take effect at home, outside of school hours, and when the device is off the FCPS network. They will not override standard district filtering policies during the instructional day.

Customize Your Lightspeed Settings

All parents should be receiving weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report emails. To set up these new features, click the “Log in or Register” button at the bottom of your weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.

Visit the FCPS Lightspeed Parent Portal Guide for more information. If you have additional questions, submit a Parent Technology Support Ticket.

Parents are encouraged to discuss internet boundaries with their children so that they can understand the reasoning behind any limits and the differences between access at home and at school. Get tips on talking to your children about technology safety.

💻 Catch Up on Your Child’s Classwork in Schoology

Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected.

A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE account. Get more information on how to login and use Schoology.

SEL Screener Parent/Guardian Notification

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Advanced Academic Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K to 12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.

Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

  • Fall identification: Students in grades 3 to 7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15.
  • Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2 to 7 may be referred by December 15.

FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services:

  • All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT).
  • Students in Grades 3 to 6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
  • Students in Grades 3 to 6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Ms. Lauren Williams, school testing coordinator, at LGWilliams2@fcps.edu by September 30.
