kickoff2026-2

The countdown is over! Our teachers are back, energized, and ready to make this the best year yet. We can't wait to welcome our Cougars! 🐾❤️

Dear Haycock Families,

I hope everyone is ready for Open House! Open House is tomorrow, and we are so excited to welcome our students and families back to Haycock.

Our teachers have been busy all week setting up their classrooms, participating in professional development, and preparing to welcome your children. They put so much time, care, and effort into making their classrooms ready for a great year, and we can’t wait for you to see everything tomorrow!

Please make sure to attend Open House during the appropriate time based on the schedule listed below.

Please join the PTA! Our PTA plays such an important role in the Haycock community. Your membership helps fund activities and programs that enhance our students’ learning experiences and support our teachers throughout the year. Joining also gives families many opportunities to get involved and connect with our school community.

The PTA is looking for board members who would like to help shape its work this year. If you’re interested in getting more involved, please join the PTA and reach out to our PTA president to learn more.  You can email her at haycockpta@gmail.com.

We can’t wait to see everyone at Open House tomorrow!

With appreciation for your partnership,

Jeremy Ferrara, Principal jcferrara1@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP   HABoyd@fcps.edu

Krystal Styles, AP   krstyles@fcps.edu

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We look forward to seeing you at Open House!

Lunchroom Helpers

If you (or a family member/family friend) are interested in being a helper in our cafeteria during the year please reach out to Cathie Eames (CJEames@fcps.edu).  We are in need of help each day of the week from 11AM-2PM.

First Day of School:

  • Please say goodbye to your students prior to them entering the building. Parents will not accompany students into the building on the first day of school. This makes for a less overwhelming situation in our hallways.
  • Kindergarten parents may accompany their child to their classroom on the first day of school. After dropping your child at the classroom, we hope you will make your way out the back door to join the PTA “Tears and Cheers” gathering.
  • Many staff members will be in the hallways for the first week of school to help your child get to their classroom safely.
  • Our doors will open for students to enter the building at 9:05 a.m.

Kiss and Ride Procedures:

If you are bringing your child to school by car, or picking your child up from school by car, you should come through the Kiss and Ride line which is on the Westmoreland St. side of the school.

  • Pull your car forward in the line as far as possible.
  • Have your child enter and exit your car on the building side, not into the parking lot.
  • Please do not park and walk your child from Westmoreland Street or from the parking lot area.  This puts our students in unsafe situations.
  • Cars should not park in the lot. Instead, remain in your car and drop your student off.
  • Follow the directions of the staff members and safety patrols stationed in the Kiss and Ride area, traveling in a one way direction and abiding by the signs located in that area.
  • Please do not park and leave your car in the Kiss and Ride line.  This blocks others trying to move-up or exit the line.

We want all students to be safe and to begin and end their day in a pleasant way.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Student Device Policy

Starting this school year, students may only use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day. This is in accordance with a new School Board requirement, approved on July 16, which states that students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices, including personal laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smartphones, and similar devices.

Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device.

Families can help support this requirement by reminding students to bring their FCPS-issued device each day and use it for all school-related digital activities unless an approved exception applies.

New Student ID Cards and Bus Navigation System

FCPS is launching a new bus navigation system, which includes student ID cards for students who ride the bus. Students will use the cards to tap on and off the bus, helping FCPS and families know exactly which students are riding which buses.

Study Help and Support Available to Students in Schoology

A new Schoology Study and Support Hub is available for students in Schoology. This space was developed by the FCPS Educational Technology Team with input from students. It is designed to provide essential study tools and academic support resources directly to our learners.

Students can log in to Schoology and read their Schoology announcements or watch this video on the support hub for more information.

Learn About School Meals

Families need to provide their children with money to purchase meals at school or send them with a packed lunch. Alternatively, families may apply to receive free and reduced-price meal benefits, pending approval.

Explore School Meals in the New Menu Platform

Experience an easier way to view your child’s school menus using MealViewer:

  • View what is being served each day.
  • View the nutritional information for each meal.
  • See if any specific allergens are being served.
  • Get notified when your student’s favorite meal is being served.

Printable menus are always available on the Food and Nutrition Services webpage.

Bookmark the School Year Calendar

Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:

  • Days marked blue with an “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
  • Days marked orange with an “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings, if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
  • Days marked as TW, SD, and SP and in pink are holidays for students but working days for teachers and staff.

Please note that some holidays and observances, such as Eid al Fitr, may shift, and the calendar may be adjusted.

Understanding Student Rights and Responsibilities Updates: New Universal Grade Matrices for Families

Families are encouraged to review the updated FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document, which explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses in order to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Updates for the 2026-27 school year include new Universal Grade Matrices (UGMs). UGMs are charts that show behavior expectations and school responses by grade level (K-3, 4-8, and 9-12). These at-a-glance resources (in Appendix D of the SR&R) are designed to make it easier for parents and caregivers to understand how schools respond to different types of behavior concerns.

Visit the SR&R webpage for more information and to review additional updates to the SR&R for the 2026-27 school year.
