Dear Cardinal Families,
This is a wonderful first week back for Cunningham Park staff. The school is already buzzing with positive energy. The classrooms are beginning to come alive and we are so eager to welcome students.
Student teacher assignments will be released in ParentVUE this Thursday, August 20 at 6:00 am. Information about setting up or logging on to your ParentVUE account can be found here. Please call the main office at 703-255-5600 if you are unable to access this information or if you have not yet set up your account. In addition, your child’s teacher will send a TalkingPoints message to introduce themselves and connect with your family. Follow these directions to download the TalkingPoints App.
We look forward to welcoming our families to Cunningham Park for Open House on Friday, August 21 from 9:00–10:00 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit your child’s classroom, connect with our staff, and get ready for a great school year.
Our specialists in PE, Music, Art, Library, and FLES will be in the library and available to meet families and local community organizations will be in the cafeteria to share information and resources.

First Day Arrival: We’ve Got Them! 💕
The first day of school is an exciting milestone, and we know how important that first-day photo and goodbye can be! Families are welcome to walk their child to Door 1, Door 3, or Door 11 to take a quick photo and say goodbye.
We will have plenty of caring adults at Door 1 ready to welcome students and help them get to their classrooms. If your child does not yet know the way, no worries—we will walk them there! We will continue providing arrival support in the days ahead until your child feels confident and comfortable getting to class independently.
We know that goodbyes can sometimes be difficult, especially on the first day. After your photo, we ask families to keep goodbyes brief and positive and allow our staff to take it from there. Lingering can sometimes increase a child’s anxiety and make the separation more difficult.
Our staff has years of experience welcoming students, easing first-day worries, and helping children settle into their new routines. If your child enters school upset, please trust us to care for them and help them transition into their day. We will follow up with you that morning to let you know how they are doing.
Give them a hug, share an encouraging goodbye, and pass them to us. We’ve got them! 💕
🚗Kiss and Ride Information
To help reduce congestion and increase safety, we are strongly encouraging all families who drive to use our kiss and ride lanes for student drop-off and pick-up. We understand that some of our youngest students may still be in a car seat and cannot independently buckle or unbuckle themselves. If this is the case for your child, please park in a designated parking spot and use the crosswalk to cross the street to pick up or drop off your student.
Preschool Parents
All preschool parents will be required to park and walk your child to door 3. Please only cross the bus lane and kiss and ride lane at the crosswalk near door 1. Thank you for modeling safety precautions for our students by using the crosswalk.
💧Water Bottles, Accessories, and Other Items
Students are welcome and encouraged to bring water bottles to school. Please make sure your child’s water bottle is labeled with their name, is spill-proof and leak-proof, and designed to fit securely in a backpack or classroom space. Bottles with large handles or oversized straws, such as Stanley-style cups, should remain at home.
Spilled water can quickly make our tile floors slippery and unsafe. Larger spills also require assistance from our custodial team to properly clean and dry the area. Choosing a secure, leak-proof bottle helps us keep classrooms and hallways safe for everyone.
Please also help your child be successful at school by leaving crossbody bags and other nonessential accessories at home. These items can become a distraction during learning and throughout the school day. If a student brings these items, they will remain in their backpack during the school day.

Leave dinner to us, bring the whole family, and connect with fellow parents as we wrap up the first week of school. I look forward to meeting everyone and collaborating to make this a memorable year for our students and community!
