Good afternoon Newington Forest Families,
What an incredible Open House this morning! We saw so many new and familiar faces walk through our halls, and everyone was excited to meet their new teachers.
A special thank you to our PTA for providing our staff with a wonderful breakfast on Monday. It was a delicious and thoughtful way to start our big week, and we are so grateful for their continued support of our school community.
Thank you as well to all of the families who joined us for our Kindergarten Meet & Greet on Tuesday. We had a fantastic turnout, and I hope the opportunity to meet teachers helped our newest Knights feel even more excited and comfortable as they prepare for their first day of school.
The theme for our school this year is “One Team, One Goal: Student Success!” Our teachers and staff are excited, energized, and ready for a wonderful year of learning and growth. Together, we look forward to working as one team—students, staff, and families—with one shared goal: helping every student succeed!
I hope you enjoy these last few days of summer break. We can’t wait to welcome all of our Knights back to school on Monday!

  Open House & Supply Drop Off
 Early Release Wednesdays for 2026-27
FCPS will continue with limited early release Wednesdays for elementary schools during the 2026-27 school year. The number of early release Wednesdays has been reduced from eight to four days.

NEWINGTON FOREST ELEMENTARY
October 21, 2026
December 2, 2026
February 10, 2027
May 5, 2027
On these dates, dismissal will begin at 12:35pm.
Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with their peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.

Student ID Cards for NFES Bus Riders
We will begin distributing student ID cards to all our students who ride the school bus or use FCPS transportation services.
Please note that we will begin distributing student transportation cards during the second week of school.
Students who have student ID cards should begin tapping as they board and exit the bus. Only students who use FCPS transportation services will be provided with a student ID card at this time.
We ask for your patience! Bus drivers will begin checking in students next week and may need some extra time at each bus stop while they do this. The transportation team is working hard to minimize any potential delays.

As we gear up for the first day of school, make sure you have the FCPS mobile app downloaded! It's the quickest way to check the school year calendar, view lunch and breakfast menus, find school contacts, and jump to ParentVUE or Schoology from your phone.

Parents/caregivers who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese may call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS.

SEL Screener Parent/Guardian Notification
The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
