Dear Floris Families,

The countdown is on…just 18 days until the first day of school on Monday, August 24! We hope your family is enjoying the final weeks of summer while also getting excited for another incredible year at Floris Elementary.

Our building is quickly coming back to life! Classrooms are being cleaned and prepared, the hallways are shining, and our staff will be returning soon to begin getting everything ready to welcome our students back. We can't wait to fill the building with smiling faces once again.

As you begin planning for the start of the school year, please take a moment to review the Open House dates and times listed below. We hope you'll join us to meet your child's teacher, visit the classroom, and kick off what promises to be an amazing school year.

Mark your calendars! Our first PTA Meeting of the school year will be held on Thursday, August 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Floris Library. We encourage all families to attend, learn about the exciting year ahead, and discover ways to get involved in supporting our students, staff, and school community.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our students and families very soon.

Sincerely,

Principal Joshua DeSmyter

✨ New Staff Spotlight ✨

Nicole Martin

Nicole Martin: Front Office Staff

Hello Floris Families!  My name is Nicole Martin, and I am so excited to be joining the Floris Elementary School community as an Office Assistant this school year! I am a graduate of George Mason University with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and have experience in administrative and human resources support. I love helping others, staying organized, and being someone people can count on. I’m looking forward to supporting our students, families, and staff and helping make this a wonderful school year.

When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, traveling, staying active, and being out on the water whenever I can. I’m also a big New England Patriots fan (go Pats! 😊), so football season is always something I look forward to!

I can’t wait to meet all of you and become part of the Floris family. Here’s to an amazing school year filled with learning, growth, and lots of smiles!

Bette Stobo: Third Grade Teacher

My name is Bette Stobo, and I am excited to join the Floris Elementary community! I have been an educator for over ten years and earned my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Master's degree in Special Education from Marymount University. During my teacher preparation, I had the incredible opportunity to complete student teaching experiences in Uganda, Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador, which strengthened my passion for creating an inclusive and engaging classroom where every child feels valued and inspired to learn. Outside of school, I enjoy baking sourdough, hiking, traveling, DIY projects, and spending time with my three dogs—Pork, Bean, and our newest addition, Winnie. I look forward to partnering with you and your family to make this a wonderful year of learning, growth, and memorable experiences.

Lauren Leonard

Lauren Leonard: Sixth Grade Teacher

My name is Lauren Leonard, and I am thrilled to join the Floris community as a sixth-grade teacher this year!

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master of Science in Management, both from George Mason University. This background combining education and leadership allows me to bring a unique, well-rounded perspective to the classroom.

Outside of teaching, I love spending time with my husband and our three wonderful cats.

Building a strong partnership with you is incredibly important to me. I look forward to a fantastic school year and to cultivating meaningful relationships with each of your children.

New ParentVUE Mobile App Launched

On Tuesday, a new ParentVUE mobile app will become available in the Apple and Google app stores. This new app provides parents and caregivers with a more secure sign-in. The current “classic” app will remain active for about six months. Families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their child’s school data.

In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. While enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this security feature.

Learn more about installing the new ParentVUE app. Parents needing assistance should submit a Parent Support Request.

Download the FCPS App Today!

The FCPS mobile app offers a customized platform to help keep you connected and informed, directly from your smartphone. Download the FCPS mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

With the app, you can:

  • View school calendars. See events, activities, holidays, and early dismissals.
  • Check school menus. See what’s for lunch and breakfast each school day.
  • Tap to contact. Quickly call attendance lines or email school staff.
  • Stay up to date. Get the latest news from FCPS.
  • Access key links. Jump to ParentVUE, Schoology, and the FCPS website in one tap.

No need to log in, just download and go! Learn more about the FCPS mobile app.

New Student ID Cards Coming This Fall

This fall, every FCPS student will receive a student identification (ID) card as part of a divisionwide effort to modernize school transportation, improve communication with families, and strengthen student safety while traveling to and from school.

Every student who rides the school bus will need to tap on and tap off the bus every day using their new student ID card. Families can help by reinforcing this new habit with their child.

All students at our school will need to wear their student ID cards throughout the school day. We will be handing out the new student ID cards the first few weeks of school. More details will be shared soon.

Learn more about the new transportation system and student ID cards.
